Eliza Wilson was born July 16, 1861 at 30 Portland Square, Bristol, England,[1] the youngest child of Robert Wilson and Eliza (Pester) Wilson.[2] Robert died when his daughter was only 15 months old.[3]
In 1871 Eliza was a 9 year old scholar living with her sister Emma and their mother, a widowed lodging house keeper, at 10 Brighton Park in the Bristol suburb of Clifton.[4]
By 1881 Eliza was employed as a governess and living at 30 Trinity Road in the Handsworth area of Birmingham where she was described as a niece of the head of the household, Martha Haining (the exact relationship is yet to be determined).[5]
Trinity Road was still Eliza's address when she married John Galbraith on June 4, 1884.[6] Westminster Road Church, Handsworth was the site of the wedding, conducted according to Congregationalist rite, with witnesses being the groom's brother George and either the bride's sister Mary, who by then lived in London, or, more likely, another of Martha Haining's nieces, also named Mary Wilson.[5]
Eliza and John had 3 sons:
William Ian Galbraith (1885-1958)[7]
Robert Wilson Galbraith (1886-1969)[7]
Barry Franklin Galbraith (1894-1969)[8]
In 1891 the family lived in Wellington, Shropshire.[9] In 1901 they were still in Wellington, specifically at 5 Church Street also known as Bank House, as John was the manager of the local Lloyd's Bank.[10]
