Walter Winchel was a famous Journalist, actor, tap dancer, veteran and he filled many more shoes in the 30s - 60s of the United States.
Walter Winchel was born on 7 Apr 1897 in New York City, New York, New York to Jacob Winchel and Jennie Bakst. They were Jewish immigrants.[1][2]
In 1905, he was living in Manhattan, A.D. 31, E.D. 17, New York, New York with his parents, brother and maternal grandfather, Morris Baxter.[3]

He and his brother Algernon were both still living with their parents in 1915. The family home as in New York, New York, New York, [5]
The extra L in his last name was a typo on a theatre marquee. He was working with a singer named Rita Greene and one of their posters listed the extra letter, which just became the spelling of his name from then on.
After they had teamed up, and became a great act together, He and Rita were married and eventually divorced.
He spent two years of service in the U.S. Navy, becoming a Lieutenant Commander, during WWI. Upon leaving the military service, he returned to Vaudeville and the act with Rita.[6]
