Biography

Nephi Levi Windley, the son of Robert Windley and Mary Grime, was born September 2, 1846 in Pennsylvania, USA.[1][2]

At age 4 on July 22, 1850, he was living in St. Louis, Missouri, USA with his parents and five siblings.[2]

In about 1863, Nephi, a teamster (age 22), registered for the Civil War Draft. The three brothers, James, Nephi, & Moroni registered together. They were all single, living together at 14th O'Fallon & Cass, St. Louis, Missouri.[3]

On November 22, 1871 he married Jennie Finnie in St. Louis, Missouri, USA.[4]

In 1880, Nephi was a fireman, living in St., Louis, Missouri, USA, with his wife Jennie and the first two of their three children, William Frank Windley and Susan May Windley.[5]

By early in 1889, their third child, John Nephi Windley, had been born. The family moved from St. Louis, Missouri in 1889 to Washington, just before it became a state. On the 1st of April 1889, the Windleys were in Pierce County, in the Territory of Washington. Nephi was a brickmaker. This is how the family was listed on the census: N. L. Windley (42), W[illiam] (16), J[ennie] (34), S[usan] (11), J[ohn] (8)[6][7]

In April 1892, Nephi was a laborer living with his wife and their three children in Tacoma, Washington, USA.[8]

In June 1900 he was working as a stationery engineer (railroad car cleaner), living at 3534 So. K St. with his wife and their son, John.[9]

In April 1910, he was an engineer at a railway depot and was still living in Tacoma (at 3530 South K St.) with his wife Jennie.[10]

In January 1920, at age 73, he was still working as a stationery engineer at a railroad depot. He and Jennie were still living at 3530 South K St. in Tacoma.[11]

Nephi died January 30, 1925 in Tacoma, Pierce Co., Washington, USA. He is buried in the Tacoma Mausoleum.[1]

Notes

In 1964 Grace Murdoch, the daughter of Susan Windley, and granddaughter of Jennie Finnie and Nephi Windley, wrote in a letter to Kay (Johnson) Wilson (Grace's granddaughter) the following:

My own Grandmother, Jennie Finney, married Levi Nephi Windley. As nearly as I can figure it out, Grandma was born in St. Louis Dec. 18, 1849. [She was actually born in Toronto, Canada.] They were married about 1871, as they celebrated their golden wedding the November before our Bob was born which was in April 1922. No one knew anything about Grandpa except that he was a Mormon. He had practically no education -- he could read the newspaper but his writing was limited to his own name. But he was a darling and everyone loved him -- much O. V.'s temperament -- easy-going and perfectly willing to let Grandma take over. She was a little fire-ball, vivacious and full of pep. (Think that's where you and I get our temperaments, Kay -- O. V. has often said that). They had three children, Will, Susan May (my mother) and John. Uncle Will was one of the finest people I have ever known. He had three children (he married Anna Korsberg). Their three children were Bessie, Frank and Esther. Bessie is the Mrs. Charles Ludwig about whom I wrote in my last letter and who lives at Auburn [Washington]. They have three children - Charles Jr. (adopted), and Bill and Carol Ann. Bill lives in San Diego and Carol Ann out in Walnut Creek. The son Frank married but had no children. He died about 1954. Esther and her husband live in Los Altos. She had one son by her first husband -- his name is Dick Still and he lives somewhere down the peninsula.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Nephi by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Nephi:
