Biography

Early Life

Linsey Wine was born to Linzy Linza Wine and Rebecca Shaylor about 1869 in Lone Oak, Bates county, Missouri.[1]

Map of Bates County.

In the 1880 U.S. census Linsey is ten years old and living with his father in Lone Oak, Bates county, Missouri[2]. Also listed are his half sisters Martha and Lucinda Turman. His mother Rebecca Shaylor (Turman) Wine was dead by the time of this census. The proof that Linsey is son of Rebecca Shaylor is also provided in the court record in March of 1860 in Bates county.

"In the matter of the marriage of Ignatius Turman with Rebecca Shaler. Now at this day come the said Ignatius Turman and it appearing to the satisfaction of the court here that the said Ignatius Turman was lawfully married in Linn county Kansas Territory to one Rebecca Shaler daughter of Thomas Shaler, of the said county of Linn, in the territory of Kansas on or about the month of June in the year Eighteen Hundred and fifty five by a Joseph D. Wilmot a minister of the gospel who is authorized by the laws of Kansas territory to perform the marriage ceremony. It is therefore ordered that the same be certified under the seal of this court and delivered to the said Ignatius Turman aforesaid. [3]
Court record for mother.

Rebecca Shaylor's relationship to Linsey is further proved in the social security claim that names Rebecca Shalor, Linsey Wines, Smith Shalor Wines, and Lindsey Wines in the application.[4]

The only reference to a Rebecca Cochendeffer is in Linsey's death certificate where his mother is named as "Cochendeffer" but does not give a first name. The certificate is available in the link provided in the source citation.[5] Linsey was almost 90 years old at the time of his death and his last wife Dora Beard was the informant on his death certificate. It is possible that Rebecca married a man named Cochendeffer as she was 28 at the time of her marriage to Ignatius Turman but there is as yet no evidence to support it. The mother of Linsey Stephen Wine and Smith Shalor Wine is Rebecca Shaylor. Her last name at birth is established in the 1850 U.S. census record where she is listed with her parent Thomas and Jane Shaylor.[6]

Linsey married Nellie Pauline Bear on July 6, 1891 in Linn County, Kansas.[7]
