Biography

Ernie Lee Wine was born on Feb. 28, 1895 in Falls Mill, Braxton County, West Virginia, USA. He was the son of David Smith Wine and Sarah Jane "Sally" Fisher Wine.

David and Sallie had one other child, Henry Lee Wine. He was born August 6, 1891, in Falls Mill, Braxton County, WV.

Ernie's parents were divorced by 1899, in Braxton County, WV. The grounds of the divorce was adultery on Sallie's part. David was awarded custody of the couple's children.

  • A decendant of Ernie Lee Wine, son of David and Sallie Wine, related to having seen divorce documentation for David and Sallie, showing that David filed for divorce at the time that Sallie was 2 to 3 months pregnant with the couple's son, Ernie Lee Wine, who was born on Feb. 28, 1895. It is said that the divorce was not finalized till after Ernie's birth. This could pose questions as to the true paternity of Ernie Lee Wine.

Ernie's mother, Sallie, later married a man named Clarence Pool. They moved to Ohio.

Ernie's father, David, married his cousin, Mary Elizabeth Claypool, on Oct. 25, 1899, in Bulltown, Braxton County, WV.

  • David Smith Wine and both his 1st and 2nd wives, that is Sallie Fisher and Mary Elizabeth Claypool, were all cousins. They were related through the Conrad line.

David and Mary Elizabeth Wine raised Ernie Lee and Henry Nelson.

David and Mary Elizabeth were known to have had 6 children together. They were Grant L. Wine (born: Jan. 16, 1901), twins - Miova and Viola Bell Wine (born: April 28, 1906), Dana David Wine (born: Feb. 13, 1909), John O. Wine (born: Feb. 8, 1911), and Bessie Jane Wine (born in 1912). All were born in Braxton County, WV.

According to the 1900 United States Census, David S. Wine (age 32) lived in the Kanawha District (Southeast Side) of Braxton County, WV. He was head of household, and lived with his wife, Mary E. Wine (22), and his children: Henry N. (10) and Ernie L. (5). David is listed as working as Farm Labor. Both he and Mary could read and write. the family rented their home.

Ernie's brother, Grant, died on Dec. 19, 1906, in Braxton County. He was almost 6 years old. His sister, Miova, died on Dec. 30, 1906, in Braxton County. She was almost 7 months old. His brother, John, died on Feb. 12, 1911, in Braxton County, at the age of 4 days. All three children were buried in the Newville Cemetery, in Newville, Braxton County, WV, USA.

According to the 1910 United States Census, David S. Wine (age 41) lived in Holly, Braxton County, WV. He lived with his wife, Mary E. (31), along with their children: Henry N. (17), Ernie L. (15), Viola B. (3), and Dana D. (1). The family owned the farm they lived on free of mortgage. David is listed as working as a laborer at a Sawmill. Henry is listed as working as a laborer at a Coal Mine. Mary had given birth to 4 children by this time. 2 of whom were still living. David, Mary, Henry, and Ernie could read and write. Henry and Ernie had attended school that year.

Ernie's brother, Henry Nelson Wine, married Roxie May Johnson, on December 25, 1910, in Braxton County, WV.

  • Roxie May Johnson was born on June 10, 1890, in Lewis County, WV, the daughter of Herman Dillinger Johnson and Lillie May [Fox] Johnson. She was commonly known as May.
  • Henry and "May" Wine were known to have had 10 children together. They were as follows: Vincent Lee Wine (born: Feb. 25, 1912, Braxton County, WV), William Vance Wine (born: Sept. 6, 1913, Palmer, Braxton County, WV), Basil Wine (born: Dec. 19, 1914, Palmer, Braxton County, WV), Hansford H. Wine (born: August 22, 1916, Braxton County, WV), Lenora May Wine (born: Feb. 21, 1919, Mount Clare, Harrison County, WV), Lucille Myrtle Wine (born: July 27, 1921, Clarksburg, Harrison County, WV), Nona Gaye Wine (born: Jan. 30, 1923, Delaware County, Ohio), Edgar Wray Wine (born: April 15, 1925, Troy, Delaware County, Ohio), Harold Bencil Wine (born: June 21, 1929, Delaware County, Ohio), and Dale Bradley Wine (born: July 31, 1931, Delaware, Delaware County, Ohio).
  • Henry Wine moved his family from Braxton County to Harrison County, WV, sometime between October of 1916 and February of 1919. The family later moved to Delaware County, Ohio, sometime between July 1921 and January of 1923. They lived on a farm and Henry's occupation was farming.

Ernie and Lena Leota Forinash had a daughter out of wedlock. Wilsie Virginia Wine was born on May 3, 1916, in Newville, Braxton County, WV.

Ernie and Lena were married 13 days later, on May 16, 1916, in Braxton County, WV.

  • Lena Leota Forinash was born August 28, 1897, in Braxton County, WV, the daughter of Benjamin Rolandus Forinash and Virginia Edna [Hartman] Forinash.

The couple were known to have had 3 more children, all born in Clarksburg, Harrison County, WV. They were as follows: Naomi Ruth Wine (born Jan. 16, 1918), Richard Clarence Wine (born Feb. 3, 1922), and Junior Lee Wine (born Nov. 27, 1929).

Ernie's daughter, Naomi Ruth, had 2 birth records listed in Harrison County, WV. One lists her as being born in Clarksburg, the other in Mount Clare. It is probable that the family was living in Mount Clare at this time, ant that Naomi was born in the hospital in Clarksburg (probably in Saint Mary's Hospital). Mount Clare is a community about 4 1/2 miles south of Clarksburg.

According to Ernie's WWI Draft Registration Card, filled out on June 5, 1917, Ernie was 22 years old. His residence was Palmer, Braxton County, WV. His occupation was a Laborer for Hollywood Lumber Coal Company, located in Palmer, WV. He was married and had one child. He claimed exemption from the draft because of dependents. He was described as being of Medium height, slender build, having black hair and black eyes, and being Caucasian.

Ernie moved his family to Clarksburg, Harrison County, WV, by 1918.

According to the 1920 United States Census, Ernie Wine (23 years old, head of household) lived in Clarksburg, Harrison County, WV, along with his wife, Lena Wine (22), and their children: Wilsie (3) and Naoma (1). The family rented their home. Ernie is listed as working as a Fireman for the B&O Railroad. Ernie and Lena could read and write. Many of the family's neighbors also worked for the B&O Railroad. Most were Coal Miners. Others worked for a Glass Factory.

Ernie worked as a Fireman for the B&O Railroad in 1922, in Harrison County, WV (according to his son, Richard's birth record). This would have been the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad.

On June 24, 1923, Ernie's half-sister, Viola "Vie", married McComas Walker Wood, in Braxton County, WV. The couple had a son, Harold David Wood. He was born on July 1, 1924, in Clarksburg, Harrison County, WV. Vie and Walker Wood would later divorce.

  • McComas Walker Wood, commonly known as "Walker" was born on April 30, 1904, in Orlando, Braxton County, WV, the son of Samuel Clay Wood and Rosa Victoria [Murphy] Wood.

Ernie's mother, Sarah Jane "Sallie" [Fisher] Pool, died on Nov. 2, 1924, in Delaware, Delaware County, Ohio. She was a widow. The cause of death was Tetanus. She was about 55 years and 2 months old at the time of her death. She was buried in the Green Mound Cemetery, in Kilbourne, Delaware County, Ohio, USA.

On July 9, 1927, Ernie's half-sister, Vie, gave birth to her second son, Lewis Leroy Wood, commonly known as Leroy, in Viopa, Harrison County, WV. However, Walker Wood was not Leroy's biological father.

  • Vie's husband, Walker Wood, had been sent to Moundsville Prison, in West Virginia. The family story is that Walker Wood killed a man in a card game. While Walker was incarcerated, 20 year old Vie had a non-concentual relationship with Solen Clinton "Sol" Dadisman, who was much older than she (about 50 at the time). This resulted in the conception of Leroy Wood. Census records indicate that Vie and Walker were divorced by 1930. [This was attested to by a confession from Vie, as well as some Wine and Dadisman decendants].
  • Solen Clinton Dadisman, commonly known as "Sol", was born on June 9, 1876, in Barbour County, WV. He was the son of Joseph Milton Dadisman and Margaret Elizabeth [Halterman] Dadisman. Sol was married to Sarah Ellen [Tyre] Dadisman at the time of Leroy Wood's birth. Sol and Sarah had a large family of children at this time. Sol had a reputation for being an alcoholic and being abusive.

According to the 1930 United States Census, Earnie Wine (age 35, head of household) lived in Clarksburg, Harrison County, WV, along with his wife, Lena Wine (32), and their children: Wilsis (13), Naoma R. (12), Richard (8), and Junior C. (0). The family owned their home. It had a value of$2000. All but Junior could read and write. The 3 oldest children had attended school that year. Ernie's occupation was Fireman for Railroad Company. Most of the family's neighbors were listed as unemployed. Most of the others worked for the Railroad or Glass Plant.

Ernie's half-sister, Vie, and her first husband, McComas Walker Wood, were divorced by November of 1933. Vie remarried, to Clarence Morgan Blair, on Nov. 22, 1933, in Clarksburg, Harrison County, WV.

  • Clarence Morgan Blair was born on December 24, 1907, in Mount Clare, Harrison County, WV, son of Charles William Benton Blair and Eliza Ann [Tenney] Blair [AKA: Anna Eliza].
  • Clarence and Vie Blair did not have any children together. They would later divorce.

Ernie's daughter, Naomi Ruth, married Argyl Keister on Feb. 12, 1938, in Clarksburg, Harrison County, WV. They were married by Rev. J. Marion Smith. Argyl's residence at the time was Clarksburg, WV. Naomi's was Farimont, Marion County, WV.

  • Argyl Keister was born on May 19, 1915, in Cox Mill, Troy, Gilmer County, WV, the son of Asa Wesley Keister and Ada M. [Strother] Keister.

Ernie's father, David Smith Wine, died on Nov. 10, 1939, in Overfield, Barbour County, Barbour County, WV. He was 71 years old. Cause of death on WV Death Certificate states that there was not physician in attendance / Leakage of heart. The informant on the death certificate was Dana Wine, David's son. David was buried on Nov. 12, 1939, in the Overfield Cemetery, in Overfield, Barbour County, WV, USA.

According to the 1940 United States Census, Ernie L. Wine (age 45, head of household) lived in Clarksburg, Harrison County, WV, along with his wife, Lena L. Wine (43), and their children: Wilsie (23), Richard (18), and Junior Lee (10), Richard and Junior had attended school that year. Ernie is listed as having a 4th grade education, Lena a 5th grade education. Wilsie completed the 2nd year of High School, Richard had completed the 3rd year of High School at this point. And, Junior Lee had completed the 4th grade. Ernie worked as a Fireman for Steam Railroad. Wilsie worked as a selector for a Glass Factory. Most of the family's neighbors worked for a Glass Factory.

According to the above Census, Ernie's daughter, Naomi Ruth [Wine] Keister also lived in Clarksburg, WV at this time. She was listed as Nelma Keister (age 22), living in the household of her husband, Argel Keister [Argyl] (age 24) Naomi is listed as having completed 4 years of High School, Argyl completed 2 years of High School. Naomi was employed as a decorator for a Pressed Glass Plant. Argyl was unemployed and seeking work.

Ernie's son, Richard, enlisted in the Army Air Corps on July 12, 1940, at Fort Hayes, Columbus, Ohio. His rank was PRIVATE. The record stated that he had completed 4 years of High School. His civilian occupation was listed as Skilled Occupations in production of bakery products. He was a veteran of WWII.

Ernie's son-in-law, Argyl Keister, listed Ernie as a person who would always know his address, on Argyl's WWII Draft Card Registratration, dated Feb. 17, 1942. Ernie is listed as Mr. Erney L Wine, address: 1404 Crislip Ave, Clarksburg, WV. On the card, Argyl is described as white, light complexion, blond, blue eyes, height: 5'11", weight: 160, age 25, and unemployed. His address is listed as 757 Locust Street, Clarksburg, WV. Nothing is mentioned about Argyl's wife or marital status.

  • It is recounted by a family member that Ernie's daughter, Naomi, and her husand, Argyl Keister, divorced, and that Naomi remarried, to a man named Leonard Harding. A North Carolina Divorce record has been found for Leonard and Naomi Harding. They were divorced in Iredell County, North Carolina. It is also said that Naomi had no children.

According to Ernie's WWII Draft Registration Card, filled out on April 27, 1942, Ernie's residence was 1404 Crislip Avenue, Clarksburg, Harrison County, WV. He was 47 years old. Person who would always know his address was listed as Mrs. Lena Wine (Erine's wife) living at the same address. His employer was listed as Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, located in Clarksburg, WV. Ernie was described as being White, having blue eyes, brown hair, height of 5'5", weight of 185 pounds. Other physical characteristics: Tatoo on right arm that read E.B.W. 1916.

Ernie's son, Richard Clarence Wine, married Violet Virginia Bucklew, on Feb. 3, 1946, in Clarksburg, Harrison County, WV.

  • Violet was born Oct. 26, 1926, in Clarksburg, Harrison County, WV, the daughter of Ernest Bucklew and Katherine [Armour] Bucklew.

Ernie's half-sister, Vie, was divorced from her second husband, Clarence Blair, by 1948. She remarried for a third and final time, on December 30, 1948, to Francis Otis Barger. They were wed in Philippi, Barbour County, West Virginia.

  • Francis Otis Barger, commonly known as "Frank", was born on May 24, 1901, in Mannington, Marion County, WV, the son of Harry Darwin Barger and Narcissus Jane [Hammond] Barger. He had been married previously before to a woman named Otis Morris [This was actually her name] and had grown children. Frank was divorced at the time of his marriage to Vie. He was a carpenter by trade.
  • Frank and Vie Barger did not have any children together.

Ernie's wife, Lena Leota [Forinash] Wine died on October 8, 1949, at St. Mary's Hospital in Clarksburg, Harrison County, WV. The cause of death on her death certificate was Hemorrhage-Esophagus / Contributory cause was Portal Obstruction Bantis Disease. She was listed as being 52 years , 1 month, and 10 days old, married, and a housewife. Her address at the time was 1404 Crislip Avenue, Clarksburg, Harrison County, WV.

Lena was buried in the Newville Cemetery, in Newville, Braxton County, West Virignia, USA, on October 11, 1949.

Ernie began living with a widow, named Honor Virginia [Spencer] Shriver. They were married on Feb. 25, 1950, in Clarksburg, Harrison County, WV. He was 54 years old at the time. She was 51. Their residence at the time was 1404 Crislip Avenue, Clarksburg, Harrison County, WV.

  • Honor Virginia Spencer, commonly known as "Virginia", was born May 19, 1898, in Big Moses, Tyler County, West Virignia, the daughter of William Elijah Spencer and Laura Ann [Wease] Spencer. She was a widow. Her second husband, Elias Benton Shriver, had died on Jan. 25, 1946, in Clarksburg. Her first husband was Charles Luther Tedrow. The couple had one child form this union, Nellie Blanche Tedrow (born Feb. 19, 1922)

Ernie Lee Wine died on June 11, 1969 in St. Mary's Hospital, in Clarksburg, Harrison County, West Virginia, USA. He was 74 years old at the time of his death. According to his WV death certificate, cause of death was Pulmonary Edema due to Arteriosclerotic heart disease. His occupation was listed as Railroad Engineer. He was married to Honor Virginia Spencer. The informant on the certificate was his wife, Mrs. Ernie L. Wine.

He was buried on June 13, 1969 in the Newville Cemetery in Newville, Braxton County, West Virginia, USA.
