Elizabeth Winfield was born in about 1834 at Hailey in Oxfordshire. (Hailey was within the parish of Witney.) She was the daughter of Joseph Winfield and his wife Elizabeth. ^{[1] [2] [3] [4]}

In 1851 Elizabeth Winfield was living at Woodgreen in Witney with her parents Joseph and Elizabeth and their other children. Her age was given as 16, implying a birth date in 1834 or 1835. Her birthplace was given as Witney, Oxfordshire. ^[1]

William Smith, aged 34, a labourer, of Crawley, son of Richard Smith, labourer; and Elizabeth Winfield, aged 22, of Hailey, daughter of Joseph Winfield, spinner; were married at St John's church in Hailey in Oxfordshire on 20 October 1856. ^[2]

In 1861 Elizabeth Smith was living in a cottage at Crawley in Oxfordshire with her husband William and their sons. Her age was given as 26, implying a birth date in 1834 or 1835. Her birthplace was given as Hailey, Oxfordshire. ^[3]
