Biography

Elizabeth Winfield was born in about 1834 at Hailey in Oxfordshire. (Hailey was within the parish of Witney.) She was the daughter of Joseph Winfield and his wife Elizabeth. [1] [2] [3] [4]

In 1851 Elizabeth Winfield was living at Woodgreen in Witney with her parents Joseph and Elizabeth and their other children. Her age was given as 16, implying a birth date in 1834 or 1835. Her birthplace was given as Witney, Oxfordshire. [1]

William Smith, aged 34, a labourer, of Crawley, son of Richard Smith, labourer; and Elizabeth Winfield, aged 22, of Hailey, daughter of Joseph Winfield, spinner; were married at St John's church in Hailey in Oxfordshire on 20 October 1856. [2]

In 1861 Elizabeth Smith was living in a cottage at Crawley in Oxfordshire with her husband William and their sons. Her age was given as 26, implying a birth date in 1834 or 1835. Her birthplace was given as Hailey, Oxfordshire. [3]

In 1871 Elizabeth was living at Crawley with her husband and their children. Her age was given as 38, implying a birth date in 1832 or 1833. Her birthplace was given as Witney, Oxfordshire. She was working at a blanket mill. [5]

In 1881 the widowed Elizabeth Smith was living in a cottage at Crawley with her children. Her age was given as 46, implying a birth date in 1834 or 1835. Her birthplace was given as Witney, Oxfordshire. She was a feeder at a blanket mill. [6]

In 1911 Elizabeth was living alone at New Mills in Witney. Her age was given as 76, implying a birth date in 1834 or 1835. Her birthplace was given as Hailey, Oxfordshire. She was employed at mop making. It was apparently stated (although the information was not requested) that Elizabeth had had 10 children, of whom 6 had died. [4]
