Phillips, Maine Vital records gives conflicting information regarding Jesse's birth date. In one record, his birth is given as 6 Dec 1817, but in two other records it is given as 29 Dec 1817. Additionally, his gravestone list his age as 57 yrs. 6 ms. with no mention of any days.
Jesse was a farmer, and lived (and died) in Phillips, Maine. Yet, for some unknown reason, he traveled all the way to Delaware to marry his wife, Sarah Jane Singles. There is no prior connection between the two families, so the circumstances surrounding this marriage are a mystery.
Jesse is said to have died from a broken heart caused by the death of his daughter, Rose. Rose was married (to Nelson Walker) in July 1874, and died in March 1875. Jesse's son-in-law, Henry R. Webber, was appointed his guardian on 4 May 1875, and Jesse died 29 Jun of that year.
