According to the 1820 census, Charles lived in White Creek, Washington county, NY, with 6 people in his household. In 1830, there was one man between 50 and 60, one between 15 and 20, one between 10 and 15 and one between 5 and 10, with no women. Charles would have been 40 and he would have remarried, having some daughters, so something is not right here. The 1840 census gives his household having 1 man 50-60, 1 woman 40-50, 1 woman 20-30 and 1 girl 5-10, and Lorenzo P Wing listed directly below him with 1 man 30-40, 1 woman 20-30 and 1 girl under 5. This would definitely be our Charles. The 1850 census sees Charles moving to Salem, Washington, with Charles Wing, 59; Sally (58), Martha (28) and Mary F (6). Charles was a farmer; the real estate belonged to Sally, worth $3500. In 1855 Charles is listed as head, Sally as his wife and Mary F as his granddaughter. Charles was a shoemaker, living here for 8 years (thus moving here in 1847) while Mary lived here 10 years. So it seems Charles' daughter Martha lived here with her husband who died, so Charles moved in to help. In 1860, Charles (69, shoemaker) and Sarah (Sally, 66) lived here with Albert (19, farm labor) and Mary F (16, teacher), obviously adding one more grandchild to do the work around the farm. The real estate was worth $2000; Charles' personal estate was worth $300; Albert's and Mary's personal estate was worth $575 each. Charles' last census, 1865, has him (75, shoemaker) with Sally (72) and Mary (19). It also says Charles and Sally had 2 children and Mary was still single.
There is a watercolor that lists the family record through 1840 that is in the possession of Nathan Liverant and Son, LLC, a dealer in antiques and fine art. It is by artist Justus Dalee (1793 - 1878). The birth and marriage dates that we know of come from this beautiful record.
