It was once thought that Jabez Wing, son of John Wing and Experience Gifford, married Anna Spooner Tobey as found at and that our Jabez had an unknown lineage. However, some Hoxie records actually list the parents of our Jabez as John and Experience, proving his ancestry. Some people now believe that the Jabez Wing at , husband of Anna Spooner, was an illegitimate son of Jabez' wife Anna Hoxie Wing's grandfather Jashub Wing. Others believe he was actually Anna Hoxie Wing's brother Savory.

Jabez Wing was a tanner. He was a Quaker, and although he lived during the Revolutionary War he probably took no part in it. He also had a very big sense of humor.
There are several fun stories about Jabez that have survived and have been placed in the annals of the Wing family in the OWL, their yearly magazine since 1902. Because stories from these magazines has been abused by certain individuals, the Wing Society has asked that these stories not be shared on the internet unless they are shared in other published sources.
In the 1774 census of Smithfield, Rhode Island, Jabez appears as having 10 people in his household: 2 men, 3 women, 3 boys and 2 girls. The only other Wing in Smithfield at this time was a Benjamin Wing, probably Jabez' brother or cousin. Jabez also appears in the 1800 census of Smithfield, RI.
From the Smithfield 1778 tax list: Jabez Wing was taxed on 1 tan yard, 4 houses, 2 horses, 2 oxen, 18 horned cattle, 15 sheep / goats, 7 swine, 96 actress pasture to keep 11 cows, 8 acres of tillage, 80 bushels grain, 1 acre orchard, 6 barrels cider, 40 acres meadow, 8 tons English hay, 7 tons fresh hay, 35 acres wood & waste land, total acres 180, 7.10 pounds debt, 112 pounds personal estate, 750 pounds real estate, ratable value 862 pounds.
In the 1790 census in Smithfield, Jabez' household had 2 men above 16, 1 boy under 16, 3 women and 1 other free person. In the 1810 census, his household is down to 1 man, 1 woman, 1 boy and 1 girl.
