Carrie Prudence Wingard was the daughter of George Franklin Wingard and Maria (Sultzbach) Wingard, born in May 1869 in Millersburg, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. According to family lore, she was given the name "Prudence" in honor of a little girl in Virginia who had helped keep George Wingard alive after he was injured during the Civil War and left behind on the battlefield in Confederate-controlled territory. He found shelter in a farm shed owned by a sympathetic family who sent their young daughter "Prudy" to bring him food and tend to his needs. To honor the girl who did so much for him, he gave her name to his first daughter. Unfortunately, Carrie Prudence died in infancy on 11 August 1869, at the age of 2 months and 26 days.[1] She was her parents' only daughter, but her brother J. Custer Wingard honored his father's commitment to "Prudy" by giving that name to a daughter.
Carrie Prudence is buried in Oak Hill Cemetery in Millersburg, Pennsylvania. She shares a grave marker with her brother G. Franklin Wingard.[1]
