Shreveport, La., Nov. 9 (AP) - State Senator Thomas C. Wingate, 73, of Leesville, veteran member of the Louisiana legislature and at one time acting lieutenant-governor, died at a local hospital today after a two week illness.
The body was taken to Leesville where final rites and interment will take place Friday, the hour to be designated later.
Senator Wingate besides having served in the state Senate from the Vernon-Sabine district since 1920, had also served two terms as sheriff of Vernon parish from 1904 to 1908 and from 1912 to 1916. Previous to his first term as sheriff he was in the state Senate for one term. He also served a four-year term as Vernon parish tax assessor.
When Lieut. Gov. John B Fournet was elected to the state supreme court in 1934, Senator Wingate as president pro tempore of the state Senate became acting lieutenant governor.
Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Margaret W. White and Mrs. Charles Cox, both of Shreveport, and Mrs. Helen Allen of Leesville; a son, Robert Wingate of Freeport, Texas; a number of grandchildren and three great grand children.
Senator Wingate was a member of the Leesville Baptist church and of the Leesville Masonic lodge, being the oldest member of that lodge. He was a native of Merryville, having been born there Oct. 10, 1866
