Biography

Theodosia was born in 1847. She was the daughter of George Winkle and Mary Howe.^[1]

Theodosia was with her parents in the 1851 census at Tunstall, Staffordshire.^[2]

In the 1861 census, she was visiting 20-year-old Mary A. Wood. Her parents appeared to be in the house next door (same census page).^[3]

She married Thomas Johnson on 15 May 1864 at St John, Burslem, Staffordshire.^[4][5]

Their (known) children were: Henry, Jesse, Thomas, Mary, Elizabeth, Theodosia, and Emily(?) W.

The growing family were recorded on Amicable Street in Tunstall, Staffordshire in the 1871 census. Also with them were Theodosia's parents and a niece and nephew (12-year-old Ellen Walton and 8-year-old William Walton).^[6][7]

Thomas died sometime before 1881. In the 1881 census, a widowed Theodosia was at 32 Queen Street, Tunstall with eight children and her mother. She had taken in a 'lodger' called Joseph Hickman - an unemployed plumber. 'Lodger' appears to be a euphemism as she now had a 9-month-old daughter called Emily H. Hickman. The child's birth record gives her full name as Emily Holland Hickman Johnson, suggesting this was Joseph's baby.^[8][9][10]

She and Joseph Hickman married on 15 November 1881 at Burslem.^[11]

Their (known) children together were: Emily, Alice, Florence, Joseph, and Minnie.

By 1891, Theodosia was widowed again. She appears on the 1891 census, still at 32 Queen Street, Tunstall, with seven of her children. Also with her is a lodger - 19-year-old potter Arthur Howell.^[12]
