1830 Census, Estill Co. p.245. Wm. Winkler, 1m age 30-40; 1f age 70-80. I assume living with his mother

William Winkler m. Nancy Noland. July 4, 1814. Richard Morton, Bondsman. 19 Oct 1836. William Winkler vs. Nancy Winkler, whereas Williams Winkler intermarried with a Nancy Noland, lived with her for several years, she abandoned her bed and now is more than 13 years since his wife abandoned him. Note: If indeed Nancy had left William thirteen years earlier in 1823, then it's likely some of the children were not his, particularly daughter Nancy whose grave marker gives her birth in 1825. DNA has changed the whole perspective on this situation. I have matches to at least two people who have Winkler descent occuring earlier than William - and I do not match them in any other time or place. One of the matches descends from an aunt of William Winkler's. There seems to be little doubt William Winkler was the father of all of Nancy Noland Winkler's children. Either the daughter Nancy's birth date is off a year or two, or William exaggerated when he stated Nancy had moved out 13 years previously - or some of both. Nancy could even have been pregnant at the time of the divorce. Nancy Noland Winkler had no more children after daughter Nancy and did not marry again.

22 Jul 1839 gave deposition for his mother Mrs. Susannah Winkler to receive her husband's revolutionary pension. Stated age was 41.

1850 Estill Co Census. William with new wife Margaret and 6 children. William Winkler, age 52, b. NC. Margaret, 34. Sally, 12. Susan 9. Elizabeth 7. James H. 5. Polly A. 3, Elvina, age 8 months. At least one database listed Sally as a child of Nancy Noland - I believe she was Margaret's child. Perhaps born before the couple married. William's acquaintance with Margaret Farthing, may have been the catalyst for filing for his divorce from Nancy Noland.

1860 Estill Co. William and Margaret had two more children listed in this census. William Winkler, age 64, b. NC. Margaret, 40, b. KY Susan 18. Elizabeth 15. Jas. 14. Polly A. 12. Elvina 10. Liza J. 8. Aleda, age 4.
