Biography

Research Notes

A distant cousin on my mother's side wrote to me back in 2001 to tell me that she had had her mitochondrial DNA tested through Oxford Ancestors, and that she was told that our common female ancestor, Anna Christina (Winkler) Stern, who died in Posen province, Prussia, about 1825, was of Mongolian or Native American descent (although this ancestor is on my mother's side, she is not in my direct female line). My cousin was so puzzled that she asked the testers to repeat the test, and it came out the same. She was given a very unusual result, Haplogroup D, which according to Professor Bryan Sykes is very rarely found in native Europeans, but is found in East Asians and some Native Americans. I wrote down this information in 2005 and I have not kept up with current information about the D group.

I must mention here that Christian Stern, Henriette's father, was married twice, and the records are ambiguous. Henriette's confirmation record (which I take to be the best primary source for her birth) says that she was the daughter of Christian Stern and Anna Christina Winklerin (the 'in' suffix on the surname indicates a female). The name is also given as "Christiane Winkel." Yet her brother Johann George Stern's confirmation record in FHLC film #719,283 reads: Year 1833: Johann George Stern, age 16 yrs. 2 mos. Slonawy, son of Christian Stern and Anna Christina Birkholtz. This child could be also the son of Christian Stern and Anna Christina Winkler, as he is closest to age among children of Christian found so far to Henriette Stern. And then the record for the next child: 4 June 1838 no. 76. Slonawy: Catharina Stern age 14 yrs. 9 mo. dau. of Christian Stern and Christiane Winkel. Then there are Gottlieb, Christian J., and Andrew, given as children of Anna Christina Birkholtz, born 1820, 1823 and 1828 respectively. This would seem to indicate a second marriage for the father around 1820, and perhaps someone made a mistake in recording Catharina Stern's parents. Perhaps.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Anna by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Anna:
