Notes
Note HI186(Research):I have census evidence which suggests Conrad Jersey Winkler (born abt 1766) could be the father of Thomas H. Winkler. According to 1850-1870 censuses, T.H. was born in North Carolina abt 1793.
The 1800 U.S. census shows a Conrad Jersey Winkler (Jersey is probably a nickname, since later censuses state he was born in New Jersey) was in Burke County, N.C. He and his wife were in the 26-44 category, with two males in the 10-15 categories, one female in the 10-15, and one male in the under 10. This latter one could be our Thomas H.
The 1810 U.S. census shows a Conrad Winkler in Morgenton, Burke County, N.C.. He and his wife were in the 45 and over category with 2 males in the 10-15 group, 1 female under 10, and 1 male in the 16-25 group. The latter I believe to be our Thomas H.
The 1820 U.S. census shows a Conrad Winkler in Burke County, N.C. He and his wife were in the >45 category with one male in the 16-26, two females in the 16-26 group, and one male in the 26-45 group. The latter I believe to be our Thomas.H.
The 1830 U.S. census shows a Conrad Winkler in Burke County, N.C. He and his wife were in the 60-70 category.
The 1830 U.S. census shows a Thomas Winkler in Franklin County, TN. He and his wife are in the 30-40 category with two males in the under 5 category, two males in the 5-10, one in the 10-15, one female in the 10-15. I'm thinking one of the males in the <5 category is my Thomas J. This census info creates a problem. If T.H. was still with his father Conrad in 1820, how could he have sired six children by 1830, two of them born at or before 1920. It's quite possible that T.H. married a woman who already had children and/or perhaps there were multiple births. Hardly a deal killer but good to keep in mind. A Thomas Winkler also shows up in the Franklin County Court Minutes, Vol 2 (1832-1837), pgs 54 and 215. The first one, dated 28 Aug 1832, terminates his position as overseer of a road (whatever that means). In the second one, dated January 1833, it appears that a tract of land which Thomas used to live was given to someone to whom Thomas owed. Maybe this is about the time he went to Alabama (skipped town?). He did receive a land grant in Alabama in Oct 1834.
The 1840 U.S. census shows a Jersey C. Winkler in Franklin County, TN. He is in the 70-80 category. There's one male 10-15, two 15-20, one female 10-15, one 40-50 and one 50-60. Our T.H. is already in Itawamba County, MS in 1850, He and his wife are in the 40-50 category with two 5-10 males, one 5-10 female and one 10-15 male, who is probably our Thos. J. There are also two slaves:a male under 10 and a female 10-24.
The fact that Conrad Jersey shows up in Franklin County, TN where Thomas Winkler is helps to suggest the father/son relationship. Jersey Conrad Winkler had a will in Jan 1852 that mentioned his wife Margaret, daughter Moriah (husband A.C. Cobb) and Alfred and Ephriam Winkler. If Thomas is also his son, he isn't named.
Jarsey(sp), 84, N.J. and Margaret, 66, N.C. show up in the Franklin Co. 1850 Census along with 36 year old Alfred E., N.C., 14 yr old Ephram, Tn and 10 year old Hiram, Tn. I'm guessing Alfred is his son and the other two are grandsons. Another researcher on ancestry says the two youngins are sons of Alfred. He apparently married Margaret between 1830 and 1840, because his wife before 1840 was always about his age. Since Thomas H. was b. 1793, if he is Jersey's son, it's with a previous wife and not Margaret. Indeed, the other Ancestry research said that "Jersey and Margaret Hise had the following children.Francis Marion the eldest son 1809,Ephraim 1810, Alfred E 1812, Anna Mariah 1819,Evaline 1822 and Jane 1825. Jersey and first wife had 2 known sons,Jacob Jr 1790 and Henry 1794, may have been others. Alfred E and Elizabeth Conn had Alfred Edward 1854, Francis 1856(female),Mariah Emeline 1859, Jeff Davis 1861 and Sarah Elizabeth 1866. Alfred E and first wife had Ephraim 1836 and George Hiram 1840. Alfred ,along with his sons are with Jersey and Margaret on the 1850 census which confuse many.
Note NI186Thomas H. Winkler was, according to the U.S. Census record, born in North Carolina about 1793. In 1830, he and his wife and six children were living in Franklin County, Tennessee. By 1840, they were living in Itawamba County, Mississippi. This move probably occurred about 1831. As a historical note, the Choctaw and Chickasaw tribes signed three treaties between 1820 and 1832 ceding their Mississippi lands and agreeing to move to Indian Territory. This resulted in an influx of settlers to the state. It was probably this availability of land that brought our Winkler ancestors to Mississippi. Thomas's wife (name unknown) probably died soon after 1840, because in 1843 he married Jane Moongham.
By 1860, they had moved to Caldwell County, Texas. At the time of the 1870 Census, they were living on their farm in nearby Lavaca County. Information on them after this time is unavailable. Their youngest son Robert was, however, still a resident of Lavaca County eleven years later.
