Mary (Winkler) Deitel migrated from Hungary to United States.

Mari was probably born between 1858 and 1862 (see Research Notes) in Vásárosnamény, Bereg, Hungary, then part of the Kingdom of Hungary (now Vásárosnamény, Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg County, Hungary). Her father was Bernath Winkler.[1]

Mari married Herman Deitel, a widower, September 30, 1878 in Vásárosnamény, Bereg, Hungary and the marriage was registered in Beregszasz, Bereg, Hungary (now Ukraine).[1]

It is believed that Mari and Zali (Winkler) Deitel (Herman's first wife) were sisters. Herman and Zali had at least six children, of whom only two are known to have survived past early infancy. Thus, by marrying her brother-in-law, Mari became stepmother to her young nieces, Fani and Roza. Mari and Herman subsequently had at least eight children together, of whom only six are known to have survived past early infancy (see Research Notes).

After children Fani, Roza, Ida, and Eszther had immigrated to the United States separately in the 1890's, Mari and Herman followed with Zoltan, Szerena, Heile, and Bernath in 1900. They traveled from their home in Vaines, Hungary to Hamburg, Germany, where they boarded the SS Pennsylvania. Herman's brother (Josef Deitel) provided the money to pay their passage, after which the family had $50 remaining. They planned to join Josef in the United States. The ship left Hamburg October 27, 1900 and arrived in Manhattan, New York, New York, United States November 10, 1900.[2] In the United States, she was known as Mary, her stepchildren were known as Fanny and Rosi, and her children were known as Ida, Esther, Louis, Sara, Helen, and Benjamin.

In 1905, Herman (age 60) and Mary (shown as Marrie, age 46) lived in Manhattan, New York, New York, United States with children Louis (shown as Sonnie, age 19), Sara (shown as Sarah, age 17), Helen (shown as Hellen, age 10), and Benjamin (shown as Bennie, age 5). Boarders Jeo Sefkowitz (age 25), Morris Rich (age 22), and Meyer Fischer (age 25) also lived with the family.[3]

In 1915, the family's last name was incorrectly shown as Dietel. Mary (age 53) was a widow living in Brooklyn, Kings, New York, United States with children Louis (age 29), Sara (shown as Sarah, age 24), Helen (age 19), and Benjamin (age 15).[4]

In 1920, the family's last name was incorrectly shown as Dietel. Mary (age 59) lived in Brooklyn, Kings, New York, United States with children Sara (age 26), Helen (age 24), and Benjamin (age 19). Sara was head of the household.[5]

In 1925, Mary (age 65) and her son Benjamin (age 25) lived in Brooklyn, Kings, New York, United States, in the home of her daughter, Helen Udell (shown as Waill, age 39), son-in-law Michael Udell (shown as Waill, age 30), and their daughter Florence Udell (shown as Waill, age 4).[6]

In 1930, Mary (age 72) lived in Brooklyn, Kings, New York, United States, in the home of her daughter, Helen Udell (age 34), son-in-law Michael Udell (age 35), and their children Florence Udell (age 8), Mathew (shown as Mathews, age 4), and Estelle Udell (age 2).[7]

Mary lived with her widowed daughter, Ida, in the Bensonhurst area of Brooklyn, Kings, New York, United States from at least the mid-1940's until she died in 1952. Her great-granddaughter, Gaile Connolly, visited her there often during those years and vividly remembers these cherished opportunities to play with Mary's kitchen chair, which could convert into a step ladder (still fascinated by that chair, in 2013 Gaile learned that it was a Franklin library chair, named for Benjamin Franklin, the inventor of the concept).[8]

Mary died, probably a day or two before she was buried August 31, 1952 in the Mount Judah Cemetery in Ridgewood, Queens, New York, United States.[9] She was buried in the Rev L Flax section of the cemetery; Her son Louis is buried next to her.[10]
