William Robert Winks was born to Eaton Winks and Ada Emily Knight on 4 August 1901 in Rockhampton, Queensland, Australia.

Married in Queensland Australia to Lois Irene Bedgood and they had at least four known children named:- Allan Winks, Valerie Joyce Winks, James Robert Winks and Barbara Lois Winks.
Military service revealed he enlisted on 10 April 1942 into Australian Army; Volunteer Defence Corps No. 1 BN and served during World War Two.
