Biography

William was born in 1839. He was the son of Francis Winn and Avarilla Finch. He passed away in 1912.

Francis A. Winn (age 35) was head of household in the 1850 census for Dallas Co., TX. also in the home were Avilla (age 37), Sophronia J. (age 12), William M. (age 10), Francis A. (age 11/12), and Nancy Harlan (age 68).

In the 1860 census for Dallas, TX, F. A. Winn (age 45 and b. in TN) was head of a household with apparent wife A. H. Winn (age 47 and b. in TN), Wm. A. Winn (age 20 and b. in AL), Martha A. Winn (age 14 and b. in AL), Francis A. Winn (age 10 and b. in TX), Nancy Harlan (age 74 and b. in VA), Emmarrette Winn (age 17 and b. in TN) and Gus H. Winn (age 12 and b. TN).

William Winn (age 30 and b. in AL) was head of a household in the 1870 census for Dallas Co., TX. He was living with Ann R Winn (age 26 and b. in TN), William M. Winn (age 9 and b. in TX), Walter Winn (age 6 and b. in TX), Hasbert A. Winn (age 4 an b. in TX), Edward F. Winn (age 3 and b. in TX), Mary A. Winn (age 1 and b. in TX), and Viola Winn ( a black age 10 and b. in TX). William was a farmer.

In the agricultural census for 1870 in Dallas Co., TX, William Winn apparently owned 71 acres of improved land, 103 acres of woodland, and 115 acres of other unimproved land which was valued at $2000. The farm produced 900 bushels of corn, 60 bushels of winter wheat, and 80 bushels of oats. William owned $25 worth of farming implements, 9 horses, 10 milk cows, 20 other cattle, and 10 hogs. The livestock was valued at $680. This farm was listed next to that of F. A. Winn in the census.

In the 1900 census for Dallas Co., TX, William Winn (b. Nov. 1839 in AL) was living with his daughter Mary (b. Sep 1869 in TX), his son Frank (b. Jul 1871 in TX), and his sister Saphronia Smith (b. Nov 1837 in AL).

Research Note

According to unsourced information from Find A Grave, William served four years in the Confederate Army in Company C. 6th Texas Cavalry.
