Robert John was born in 1878 at Barton upon Humber, Lincolnshire, the son of Arthur Henry Gilbert Winship and Sophia Winship formerly Hare/Hair/Ayre. [1]
In the 1881 census Robert was living with his parents at Butts Road, Barton on Humber. He was aged 2 years. [2]
In 1891 his family was living at Winships Brickyard, Humber Bank, Barton on Humber. Robert was aged 12. [3]
Robert John Winship married Eliza Roshons Amelia Welch on 10 July 1899 at St Peter's Church, Barton upon Humber. Their marriage certificate recorded Robert was a bachelor aged 21 and a tile maker. His father was named as Arthur Henry Gilbert Winship, brick yard. Eliza was a spinster aged 19. Her father was named as John Welch, brick yard. At the time of their marriage both parties were living at Pasture Rd. Their witnesses were John Foster and Edith Winship, Robert's sister. [4]
This couple had five children named John Winship born 1899, Robert Victor Winship born 1900, Arthur Winship born 1903, Hector Maxwell Winship born 1907 and Ivy Winship born 1912.
In the 1901 census Robert and Eliza were living at Pasture Rd, Barton on Humber. Robert, aged 22, was a labourer at the chemical works. Eliza was aged 21. Children were John aged 1 and Robert aged 3 months. Visiting them was Mary Dent, aged 14. [5]
In the 1911 census Robert was aboard the sloop Lucy at Robson’s Wharf, Old Harbour, Kingston upon Hull, Yorkshire. Aged 32, he was a mate employed for the river trade. [6]
Eliza, aged 31, and children John, aged 11, Robert, aged 10, Arthur, aged 7, and Hector, aged 3, were living with John and Eliza Welch, Eliza’s parents, at Pasture Rd, Barton on Humber. [7]
Robert John Winship joined the Royal Naval Reserve, No. DA17033 on 16 July 1917 [WWI]. Records state Robert was born in Hull, Yorkshire [incorrect] to parents Arthur and Sophia on 25 June 1878. He was 5 feet, 8 inches in height with a fair complexion and blue eyes. Robert was then living at 8 Alexandra St, York [Yorkshire]. Next of kin was wife Eliza, of the same address.
Robert served on White Oak [probably HM Drifter White Oak] and Victory. He was demobilized on 21 February 1919.
Records further state Robert was issued two payments from Navy Prize Money of £6 13s. 4d. on 9 December 1920 and £10 on 11 September 1922. [8]
In the 1921 census the Winship family was still living at 8 Alexandra St, York. Robert, aged 42, was a foreman brick burner employed at the Shaftoe Tile and Brick Works. Eliza was aged 41. Sons John, aged 21, Robert, aged 20, and Arthur, aged 18, were all labourers at Shaftoe Tile and Brick Works. Hector was aged 13 and Ivy aged 9. Son Robert was married and his wife Annie, aged 21, was also living with them. [9]
The 1939 Register, taken on 29 September 1939, has been described as a snapshot of the civilian population of England and Wales just after the outbreak of the Second World War. The Register recorded each person's address, date of birth and occupation.
At that time Robert and Eliza were residing at 8 Alexandra Street, York. Robert, born 25 June 1878, was aged 61. He was working as an overseer at a brick works. Eliza was aged 59. Her date of birth was recorded as 6 January 1880. [10]
Eliza R A Winship died in 1959 aged 79 years. [11]
Robert J Winship died in 1966 aged 87 years. [12]
