Biography

Harmon Augustus Grimsley served in the Civil War, obtaining a medical leave or perhaps an honorable discharge, with a musket wound that may have been self-inflicted. Upon returning home from the war, he discovered that a female relative had been wronged. He killed the man who had wronged her, and left for the west. After his horse drowned crossing the Mississippi River, he stole another horse, and continued on to Texas, where he lived under the name William Winslow. The surname is his mother's maiden name. He did not reveal his prior identity to anyone until he was an old man.[1][2]
