Biography

Lucinda Winslow was born 6 Feb 1780[1][2] in East Haddam, Middlesex County, Connecticut, United States, the daughter of Capt. Job Winslow, a shipwright, and his 2nd wife, Mary Rogers. She was named as "Lucinda Fellows" in her father's 1804 will, which was proven in 1810.[3][4]

She had seven siblings, as well as seven half-siblings, of whom four died young, from her father's 1st marriage to Temperance Hayden.[3] There are burial records of her stepmother, who died in 1877, and her four half-siblings who died young at East Haddam, Middlesex County, Connecticut.[5]

By 1790, the family had moved 11 miles down the Connecticut River from East Haddam to Lyme, New London County, Connecticut, per the 1790 federal census.[6] The location, on the mouth of the Connecticut River as it joins the Atlantic, may have been more convenient for her father's shipbuilding trade.

Some accounts record that the family of Lucinda's stepmother had ties to Saybrook, Middlesex County, Connecticut, which was just across the Connecticut River from Lyme. In the records of Saybrook is a 14 Dec 1759 deed of one-quarter acre of land, given to Job Winslow from Ebenezer Hayden. Her half-nephew John Flack Winslow said his grandfather, Capt. Job Winslow "at Saybrook established a shipyard and followed the business of shipbuilding,"[1] although it's not clear when that was.

By 1800, the family had moved yet again, 130 miles northwest, inland from Lyme, Connecticut to Canaan, Columbia County, New York, per the 1800 federal census.[7] Some trees record that Lucinda's parents lived in New Lebanon, Columbia County, New York, but the town of New Lebanon was not formed from Canaan until 1818.[8]

Marriage

Lucinda Winslow married Warner Fellows on 8 Nov 1797 in New Lebanon (Canaan), Columbia County, New York.[4][9] New Lebanon was formed from the town of Canaan in 1818.[8]

Warner Fellows was born 9 Apr 1773 in Stonington, Connecticut, United States, the 4th of the 11 children of William Fellows and Susannah Rathbone, who moved to Stephentown, Rensselaer County, New York, [4][10] about 12 miles northeast of Canaan, Columbia County, New York, where Lucinda's parents had moved..

After the birth of their first child in Columbia County, New York, Lucinda and Warner lived and raised a large family in Westford, Otsego County, New York. The household of Warner Fellows was recorded on the 1800 US Census in Worcester, Otsego County,[11] and on the US Census (1810,[12] 1820,[13] 1830,[14] 1840,[15] 1850[16]) in Westford, Otsego County, which was one of the three towns (Decatur, Maryland and Westford) formed from Worcester in 1808. [17]

Lucinda's husband Warner was fondly known as Westford's first post rider, carrying the mail on horseback. He "made a trip from Cherry Valley every two weeks without fail. The mail came from Albany by stage coach, it is said. There were not many letters, and few papers to be read. Mail was brought from Cooperstown by wagon in a later day …” according to “Two Centuries in Westford 1787-1987”, Westford Community Association, Westford, N.Y., 1987, (p. 24).[18]

He also was one of the first trustees of the Methodist Episcopal church of Westford. "This religious organization was effected in about the year 1790, and the first church building was erected in 1823," according to "The History of Otsego County, New York," D. Hamilton Hurd.[19]

Census records show that Warner and Lucinda lived near Warner's brother William and sister Ruby (Fellows) Wright,[20] in adjoining towns of Westford and Maryland. Both Warner and his brother William (who married Martha Smith) were named in Worcester in the New York, Tax Assessment Rolls of Real and Personal Estates, 1799-1804.[21] When parts of Worcester broke off in 1808, Warner's farm became part of Westford township, and the farm of his brother William, and the farm of his sister Pamela and her husband Daniel Wright, became part of Maryland township. [17]

Children

Lucinda Winslow and her husband Warner Fellows had the following 13 children:[4]

  1. Mary Fellows, 1798-1877 (married Daniel Kelley)[22]
  2. Susanna Fellows, 1800-1874 (married William Darling)[23]
  3. Winslow Fellows, 1802-1821 (died young) [4]
  4. Amos Fellows, 1804-1886 (married Anna Cook and Lovisa Coffin)[24]
  5. Harriet Fellows, 1805-1877 (married James C. Seward)[25]
  6. Warner Fellows II, 1808-1867 (married Charlotte Howe)[26]
  7. David Griffin Fellows, 1809-1876 (married Mary Knapp)[27]
  8. John Maxfield Fellows, 1811-1841 (married Electa Plumb)[28]
  9. Lucinda Charlotte Fellows, 1814-abt 1816 (died as child) [4]
  10. Charlotte Lucinda Fellows, 1816-1816 (died as child) [4]
  11. Rathbone Richard Fellows, 1818-1886 (married Celia Emma Maddox)[29]
  12. Ezra W. Fellows, 1820-1865 (married Sarah Jameson)[30]
  13. Lucinda “Charlotte” Fellows, 1823-1907 (married Charles Thurber and William Thorn)[31]

New York census records of the adult children, which list the county of birth, identify the birth county of Warner and Lucinda's children as Otsego County, except for their eldest Mary (Mrs. Daniel Kelley), born in Columbia County, where Warner and Lucinda wed.

Death

Lucinda (Winslow) Fellows died 25 Oct 1859, presumably in Westford, Otsego County, New York, where she had lived.[4] Six years earlier, her husband Warner Fellows had died on 5 Apr 1853, aged 79, in Westford, Otsego County, and was buried there in Westford Cemetery.[32] Other family members known to be buried in Westford Cemetery are his daughter Susanna, her husband William Darling, and Warner's mother-in-law Mary (Rogers) Winslow.

Research Notes

  • Birth Place of Children. I haven't found records (beyond genealogies) to source a family history book's assertion that the children of Warner Fellows and Lucinda Winslow were born in Baldwinsville, Onondaga County, New York.
    • The census and other records confirm that Warner Fellows and family lived in Worcester and Westford, Otsego County, New York. (Westford is one of the three towns formed from Worcester in 1808.)
    • New York census records of the adult children, which list the county of birth, record that the only child not born in Otsego County was their eldest daughter Mary (Mrs. Daniel Kelley), who was born in Columbia County, New York, where Warner and Lucinda were married.
    • The headstones of Warner Fellows and his daughter Susanna (Mrs. William Darling) are in Westford Cemetery, as well as Warner's mother-in-law, Mary (Rogers) Winslow.
    • The story that his children were born in Baldwinsville may be explained by the fact that three children, Harriet (Mrs. James C. Seward), David and Amos (who later moved to Wisconsin), lived near Baldwinsville as adults. Another son Warner (who moved to Indiana) married Charlotte Howe from a family that lived near Baldwinsville.
