Sarah Jane Winstanley was born in 1899 in St Helens, Lancashire. She was the daughter of William Winstanley and Ellen (Dixon) Winstanley. Her birth was registered in the third quarter of 1899, in Prescot district.
By March 31st 1901, the family were living in Tontine Street, Windle. Sarah, the only child, was one year old; there were also eight boarders, and a domestic servant to help look after them all. Sarah's father was employed as a glass works labourer.
Sarah's mother died in 1907 in St Helens, aged 37. She was buried on 17 Jan 1907 in St Helens Cemetery, in a family grave. Sarah would have been seven years old.
By April 2nd 1911, Sarah was living with her uncle and aunt, James and Emma Traverse, in St Helens, and their children.
Sarah's father died in 1918 in St Helens, aged 75. He was buried on 23 Feb 1918, with Sarah's mother.
