Birth and Christening

Maria Cathrina was born February 24, 1827, at Ockes in the parish of Öja on the island of Gotland, as the daughter of the sheriff Zacharias Johannes Winter and Engel Hindriksdotter. She was christened March 21, and her godparents were the English vice council Jackson, the lieutenant Hans Ockander, the captain Hellström, Mrs Jackson held the baby, sergeant Ockander's wife, sergeant Ingmansson wife, and the maiden and child's aunt Anna Wahlqvist from Klinte.[1]

Childhood

When Maria was 13 her father died[2] and the following year her mother married the neighbour Lorentz Ockander.[3]

Family

September 30, 1849, Maria married her stepbrother Jacob Georg Ockander. They were both living at Botvede at the time.[4] Five children were born at Botvede[5] and three more at Tuer in the parish of Bro.[6] Out of their eight children there were two couple of twins.

Only three of their children survived childhood and in 1870 the family moved to the parish of Lokrume, only to move to Visby two years later.[7] From there they moved to North America in 1877.[8]


Death and Burial

Maria passed away of Brights Disease, November 20, 1900, and was buried at Evergreen Cemetery, Springvill, Utah county, Utah, USA.[9]
