Biography

James was born in 20 July, 1763[1]. James was baptised 21 Nov 1763, in Stoke sub Hamdon, Somerset[2]. However, the Somerset, England, Church of England Baptisms, Marriages, and Burials, 1531-1812 for Stoke Sub Hamdon (Stoke Under Ham) stateJames was baptised on June 25, 1795[3]. Occupation: Glover/Hostler.

On 30 May 1799 James was assessed a UK Land Tax Redemption of 2 shillings 6 pence in Stoke[4].

On 5 May 1785, James married Elizabeth Good of, and at, Combe St. Nicholas. The vicar who conducted the service was James's uncle Christopher Tatchell. James and Elizabeth named their first son Christopher. He, in turn, named his son Christopher Tatchell. Witnesses to the marriage were-Elizabeth Hawkins, daughter of his uncle's second wife through her first marriage, and Joseph Winter, James's brother. James' occupation is given as Glove Cutter[5].

He had 5 children with Elizabeth Good: Mary, Rev. Christopher, born 18 Dec 1788, baptized 3 Sept 1790[6], Joseph, born 23 April 1790, baptized 3 Sept 1790[7], James and John according to The Winter Family Story 1720-1992, by Dr. Charles Durham Bird.

James appears to have lived in Combe St. Nicholas for a while as he was married there in 1785, and his daughter Mary was baptised there in 1787. In 1787, he and his brother Joseph were granted land by Rev. Tatchell, vicar of Combe St. Nicholas [P.C. Lennard Payne, 27 Aug 1991]. He likely moved to Stoke sub Hamdon shortly thereafter as his son Christopher was born there on 18 Dec 1788.

James had a Land Tax Exemption for himself, for 2 s. 6 p. on 30 May 1799[8].

James was a "Glover and Coach Proprietor in Stoke-sub-Hamdon [Death Certificate]. In 1807 he took out a patent for a glover's "donkey", a clamp which held the cut pieces of leather together and enabled the sewer to guide her needle to make regular, even stitches [C.E. Coffin, 1991, Occupations - Gloving, The Greenwood Tree 16(4): 137-138].

The glove making business grew in Stoke sub Hamdon and between 1801 and 1821 this led to a rapid increase in population in the village [Victoria County History for Somerset, v 3, p 244]. Shortly after this the trade began to die out as it was necessary to pay duty on imported skins plus 5 shillings a cwt. for carriage to London. In 1826 the Yeovil area was producing 500 dozen pairs of beaver gloves per week and some kid but by 1831 it was less than 50 dozen. When the glove-making business slumped, James made a living by supplying post stage coaches with horses, that business coming to an end when the railways came [Ralph Winter in letter to his son Guy, July 1942].

E.H. Broome, a resident of Stoke sub Hamdon, in a letter of 27 Oct 1990 wrote that an ancestor, Joseph Guppy, leased Plot 556 from James Winter in 1840 for 1s 3p and had a dwelling house and a draper's shop on the plot, he was also a partner in a gloving company. Plot 556 is near the center of the village. In 1990 it was still occupied by a shop, houses and a factory making gloves.

James and his wife are both listed as age 75 and living in the West End of Stoke sub Hamdon in the 1841 Census[9]. He lived to age 80, the cause of death given on his Death Certificate being "natural decay"[10]".

He passed away in 1847 and was buried 26 Oct 1847, in Stoke sub Hamdon[11][12].

In his will dated 23 Sep 1784, but not proved till after his death in 1793, Rev. Christopher Tatchell, designated Joseph and James Winter, his nephews, executors and granted them: Pope's Tenement in Combe St. Nicholas; Spilior's Plot in Combe St. Nicholas; interest from the Great Tithes of Combe St. Nicholas; Brimley Tenements in Stoke Abbott, Dorset; and the residue of the estate after dispersal of all legacies.

Stoke sub Hampdon is spelt variously in the records.
