Harry was born in about 1860 in Lambeth, Surrey, England. No conclusive birth record has yet been found for him, but this around the year and place of birth given on his census records. His parents were Robert and Charlotte Winter.
He appeared on the 1871 Census[1] living on Blue Anchor Road Bombay Street in Bermondsey, Surrey. His parents, Robert and Charlotte (who was recorded on this census under the name 'Emma' for an unknown reason) and his siblings, Phoebe, Emma, Susan, George, and Amy were living with him. His nephew, George Henry Winter (recorded under the name 'Henry', son of his sister Emma) was also present, and recorded as the child of Robert, as it was common for children born out of wedlock to be recorded as the child of their parent's parents. Harry's father was a blacksmith.
On the 4th of July 1880, Harry married Hannah Elizabeth Renshaw at All Saints Church in Newington, Surrey.[2][3] Their marriage notice had gone out on the 13th of June.[4] The marriage was registered in the September quarter of 1880 in St Saviour Southwark.[5]
In 1891[6], Harry was living at 1 Gooch Place off Albion Street in Rotherhithe, London. He lived with his wife, Hannah, and their five children, Betsey, Emma, Robert, Mary, and Harry. Hannah's birthplace is revealed to be Derbsyshire. Harry (snr) was a 'smith hammerman', much like his father who was a blacksmith.
Harry resided at 38 Swan Lane in Rotherhithe on the 1901 Census[7], as a gas works plater, with his wife and children from the previous census. Two new daughters, Nancy and Rose, had been born. Betsey and Emma were machinists working with collars, and Robert was a lead works labourer. Also in the household was a Betsey Renshaw (widow, 68, of Arnes, Bedfordshire), a relative of Hannah's.
In 1911[8], Harry, Hannah and their children, Harry, Nancy and Rose, lived at 77 Hawkstone Road in Rotherhithe. Harry senior was a blacksmith in the gasworks industry. Harry junior was an assistant steward on a steamship and Nancy was a laundry worker.
Harry passed away in 1933. His death was registered in the September quarter of 1933 in Southwark[9].
No conclusive birth or baptism record has yet been found for Harry.
No 1861 Census has been found (for Harry or for any household family members). A likely explanation is that census records from the area in which they lived have been damaged or lost over time. The National Archives website states that 'There are some pages missing from all censuses, but 1861 has suffered most.'
No conclusive 1881 Census has yet been found, but this may be a possibility. It records a 'Henry Winter', a tanner, born about 1860 in Bermondsey, Surrey living with his wife, Ann. Ann may've been a shortening of Hannah. However, it doesn't have her birthplace recorded as Derbyshire, though perhaps the enumerator did the simple thing of writing her birthplace as the place where they lived.
