Amy was born on the 8th of June 1863 and baptised on the 8th of July at Christ Church in Southwark, Surrey.[1] Her parents were Robert and Charlotte Winter and their address as the time of the baptism was 19 Thurlow Street in Surrey and Robert's occupation was listed as 'hammerman'.
She appeared on the 1871 Census[2] living on Blue Anchor Road Bombay Street in Bermondsey, Surrey. Her parents, Robert and Charlotte (who was recorded on this census under the name 'Emma' for an unknown reason) and her siblings, Phoebe, Emma, Susan, George, and Harry were living with her. Her nephew, George Henry Winter (recorded under the name 'Henry', son of her sister Emma) was also present, and recorded as the child of Robert, as it was common for children born out of wedlock to be recorded as the child of their parent's parents. Amy's father was a blacksmith.
In 1881[3], she was living at 44 Lucey Road in St Mary Magdalen, Bermondsey with her brother, George. Amy was a servant and George was an iron plate worker.
Amy married Henry Edward Turner on the 25th of April 1885 at All Saints Church in Newington, Surrey.[4][5][6] Their marriage notice had gone out on the 5th of April[7] and the marriage was registered in the June quarter of 1885 in the district of St Saviour Southwark[8].
Amy and Henry appeared together on the 1891 Census with their three children, Henry, William, and Beatrice, living at 5 Stammer Street in Battersea, Wandsworth, London. Henry senior was a cooper born in Poplar, and the children had all been born in Deptford.
Henry passed away in 1896[9], leaving Amy a widow to care for their young children.
Amy remarried in 1899 to either George Marriott or William Dennis.[10] The marriages was registered in St Olave Southwark.
No 1861 Census has been found (for Harry or for any household family members). A likely explanation is that census records from the area in which they lived have been damaged or lost over time. The National Archives website states that 'There are some pages missing from all censuses, but 1861 has suffered most.' Fortunately, the information provided on Amy's 1863 baptism may be considered a viable alternative source for the location of the family at around the same time and also for the occupation of her father, Robert.
It is unclear what happened in Amy's life after 1899. No census records have been found as yet for her and either George Marriott or William Dennis. No parish marriage records which may exactly narrow down the man she married have been found on FindMyPast or FamilySearch.
