Joseph Winter was born in Scotland.

Joseph Winter was born on about 15 June 1884. He was the son of John Winter and Ann Smith.

His father died on 15 April 1916 at Sea. Joseph, along with his brother Alexander, carried on their father's business of Bakers and Confectioners at 14 Merchant Street, Aberdeenshire.

With the outbreak of the 1st World War, Joseph applied for an exemption to serve. The following was published on page 3 of the Aberdeen Press and Journal dated 11 May 1916:

PETERHEAD BURGH.
ADDITIONAL LIST OF CLAIMS.
Application Refused.
Joseph Winter, baker, Merchant Street, applied for exemption. At a previous sitting he had been granted exemption till 10th April, but in the interval his father had been drowned and applicant was now responsible for carrying on the business.
Conditional exemption was granted.[1]

On 28 February 1918 he was refused an exemption and was to be called up on 27 April 1918.

In the Aberdeen City and Former Counties of Aberdeenshire, Scotland, Electoral Registers (1832-1976) of 1920, 1925, 1929 and 1930 Joseph Winter was recorded living in Los Angeles but was registered for 12-14 Merchant Street, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.

He had emigrated from Glasgow, Scotland to the United States, arriving into New York on 22 September 1922 on the vessel Columbia. At the age of 39 he married 29 year old Mabel Murray Cockburn (the daughter of James Cockburn and Mary McKenzie) on 10 July 1923 at Los Angeles, California[2].

In the 1930 United States Federal Census Joseph Winter (aged 44) was living with his wife Mabel M Winter (35) and their son James C Winter (3) at West 96th Street, Los Angeles, Los Angeles, California.

Occupation: Shipping Clerk

He became a Naturalized citizen on 24 August 1937[3]. He was married to Mabel Winter, and they had one son, James Cockburn Winter (b. 27 Jul 1926, d. 30 Jan 2010),

Joseph passed away in 1961[4].
