Biography

John Winthrop Jr. married (as his second wife) Elizabeth Reade (1615–1672). Their eldest son Fitz-John Winthrop (1638–1707) served as major-general in the army, an agent in London for Connecticut (1693–1697) and as governor of Connecticut from 1698 until his death in 1707.

As the son of a wealthy and influential family, Fitz-John could flout convention in ways that normally invited serious punishment by church or government authorities. That is perhaps why he was not officially punished when about 1677 he entered into a common-law marriage with Elizabeth Tongue, fifteen years his junior, and the daughter of wealthy New London innkeepers, George and Margery Tongue. The couple had one daughter, Mary.

Elizabeth, who signed deeds and letters as late as 1698 as Elizabeth Tongue, died April 25, 1731.

Winthrop-127 and Winthrop-89 appear to represent the same person because: No other info for Winthrop-127 other than the nickname of "Fritz" and the estimated birth date of 1650. It seems probable that "Fritz John" is really "John-Fitz" and the two should be merged.
