Biography

Alfred was born in 1835.

Alfred Wintle was born in England.

Alfred was formerly a Lieutenant in Her Majesty's 15th Regiment and arrived in New Zealand on 18 October 1861 on board the Ganonoque.

Alfred married Margaret McCullough, the eldest daughter of John McCullough, Esq. in Auckland, New Zealand. They were married on 2 June 1963 by Rev E.N. Bree, at the residence of the bride's father, at Peach Mount, Mangapai.

The couple raised three sons and a daughter. Their sons were William (Charles William), Walter and Claud. Their daughter was Frances (who married Bailey Hickson).

He passed away in 1901. His sons Walter and Claud were named his executors and trustees. His property comprised of farms at Tara, Ruarangi and Opotiki. It appears that his wife was to continue to provide a home for their eldest son Charles William, but the will does not give him any absolute property - alluding to possible bankruptcy. Their son apparently exhibited diminished judgement at times, possibly due to his diabetes, and was not considered fit enough to manage an inheritance of any size, although he could read and write.

His widow, Margaret, took legal action in relation to the will. The file with papers regarding that legal challenge is held at the Auckland Office of the National Archives of New Zealand.
