Gideon was born in Warren County, Ohio the only son of his father's second wife Nancy Kaufman. He was the youngest of 8 children and grew up on a farm in Wisconsin.

Gideon Wire served in the United States Civil War. Enlisted: 1864 Mustered out: 28 May 1866 Side: USA Regiment(s): A 4th Wisconsin Cavalry
When the Civil War broke out, he signed up and served in Company A, 4th Wisconsin infantry from 1861 to 1863 and then Company A, 4th Wisconsin Calvary from 1864 to 1866.
After the war, he settled in Iowa, and was one of the founders of the town of Cambridge. He had a business, was a shoemaker, and built houses. He was very active in his church. He was living in the Iowa Old Soldiers Home in Marshalltown when he died; they were able to provide originals of many documents including his application for admission through to his death, list of possessions when he died, newspaper clippings, etc. These documents also include the original 1886 discharge from the Wisconsin cavalry.
