Biography

Elizabeth Wise was born just after the turn of the 16th to the 17th Century in Suffolk, England.

According to Torrey's New England Marriages to 1700 (Volume 3, p. 1622) Elizabeth Wise married Joseph Weld on October 11, 1620, in England.

The couple emigrated to Massachusetts in the early 1630s, and settled in Roxbury.[1]

Elizabeth died at Roxbury in the fall of 1638; Joseph was remarried to Barbara Clapp the following spring.

Research Notes

Added 18 Jan 2016:

Her LNAB should definitely be "Wise"; their marriage was recorded in All Saints, Sudbury on 11 Oct 1620, and her maiden name was Wise. She came with her mother and sister. Her mother joined the Roxbury Church as Elizabeth "Wise." Her sister Marie Wise married Robert Mason. The mother and both sisters died in Roxbury. Please see Douglas Richardson, The American Genealogist: "Widow Wise of Roxbury Mass and her son-in-law Joseph Weld and Robert Mason." (New Haven, Conn., Jan 1979) Vol 55 p 149-150.[2] Surname of PGM profiles should be based on the earliest known record and in this case the cited TAG article is our best source.

Added 13 March 2019:

Various online trees (e.g., http://dunhamwilcox.net/source_files/shatswell.htm; https://www.ancestry.com/genealogy/records/elizabeth-shatswell_33631013) repeat the error of claiming Elizabeth as née Elizabeth Shatswell. This may have originated with a query in the Boston Transcript genealogical column of 17 Feb. 1913, cited in a footnote to J. W. Linzee's 1913 "The history of Peter Parker and Sarah Ruggles of Roxbury, Mass. and their ancestors and descendants".[3]

I agree with Vic. The records I have been able to find name her only as Elizabeth Wise or Wyse. It is possible her mother remarried to a Shatswell who already had a family, and thus she might have been a step-sister to the Shatswell children.

What evidence is there that Elizabeth is the daughter of John and Judith Shatswell? Elizabeth is not mentioned in the law suit brought in 1627 by Margaret (Shatswell) Curwin, which included her brothers and sisters. (The New England Historical and Genealogical Register. Boston, MA: New England Historic Genealogical Society, 1847-. (Online database: AmericanAncestors.org, New England Historic Genealogical Society, 2001-2013.) "A New Look at the Corwin and Shatswell Families" David A. Macdonald; NEGHR 150 (April 1996):184)

I believe that she should be disconnected from these parents.

Shatswell-100 and Shatswell-13 appear to represent the same person because: Data for both match well.
