After Abraham Wise died, his 15 Nov 1780 estate inventory included a note that Adam Wise had received £84+. Adam was also the administrator of the estate.[1][2]
An Adam Wise was a head of family in the 1790 census (actually enumerated in 1782 and 1784) of Hampshire, Virginia, Abraham Johnson's list, where he heads a family of six, with one dwelling, and three other buildings.[3]
On 17 Oct 1796, "Adam Wise and Catharine his wife" sold land on Patterson's creek in Hampshire Co. to John Randolph for 300 pounds, Virginia currency. ABRAHAM Wise had obtained the land from Henry (deceased) and Elizabeth Begly on 16 Oct 1770.[4][5]
Adam, Abraham, and John Wise were present in Mason Co., Kentucky in 1800.[6] Abraham and John remained there during the 1810 census,[7][8] but Adam moved north, possibly first to Greene Co., Ohio then immediately north to Champaign Co. He patented land in the NW quarter of section 1, range 12N, township 4E (GPS 40.1451122, -83.8151957) located in the northeast portion of Mad River Township, Champaign County. The patent was issued on 30 Dec 1807. The patent notes that he is from Green County, Ohio[9][10] He paid tax on those 160 acres in
1811,[11]
1816,[12]
1817,[13]
and 1819.[14]
His non-resident heirs paid the tax in
1820,[15]
1821,[16]
1822,[17]
1823,[18]
1824,[19]
and 1825.[20]
"Adam Wise was also among the early settlers, and lived on the farm of Oliver Taylor. He was the grandfather of the venerable James Stevens, of Kingston..." The area was Concord Township that was derived from Mad River Township.[21][22]
Probate was opened on 20 Feb 1819 in Champaign Co., with executors and administrators of John Wiley, Thomas Kenton, Christopher Stephens/Stevens, and Mark Kenton.[23][24] (Note: It's possible that "Christopher" is son-in-law Christian Stevens.)
Other land records:
Adam Wise was a witness to a "lease and release" on 11 May 1778 from William & Sarah Rodgers to Valentine Burket. 51 acres on Patterson Cr. in Hampshire Co.[25]
Research Notes
Was this the same Adam Wise from Green County, Pennsylvania who bought land in Stark Co.?
There is a link on his FamilySearch profile to a Revolutionary War Pension Application, W26072, for an Adam Weise/Wise who lived in Penn. and volunteered in Md. His wife's name was Catherine. This cannot be the same person as this profile as his family was living in Dauphin, Penn.
