Surnames: WISE Sybil, I found your reference to Ivan Wise very interesting. My ancestor James Wise (b 1781 Marion Co., S. C., d. 1858 Claiborne Parish, LA) had a son Ivan Monroe Wise, b 1821. I'm wondering if this is the Ivan who visited your Joseph. My James married Permelia Miller in S. C. They were in Copiah Co., MS, by about 1820 and in Claiborne Parish, LA, by about 1840. Marion and Horry Counties are next door to each other so it seems very possible that our families were closely related. We have been unable to determine if our Wises were of German or English origin, but they intermarried with several families of German, Dutch, or Flemish origin, such as Millers, Shulers, Andings, and Lambrights. I look forward to hearing from you.

Hi, My ancestor was Joseph Wise, the son of John and Nancy Allen Mcleod, born 1830. He left Horry County, S. C. about 1850 and came to Hancock Co., Miss. We know that he had a brother Henry Wise who married Martha McDuffie. I have the info on that family line. A picture of McDuffie Sayle was found in Joseph's trunk, so I am sure he must have been connected in some way. Ivan Wise visited Joseph a short time before his death, and together they wrote up the family history. That information seems to have disapeared. Ivan may have been the son of James, who was either a brother or an Uncle of Joseph. Let me know if you have other information. Thanks, Sybil

Hi, Yes, we think this Ivan Monroe Wise was the one who visited Joseph Wise in 1910 searching for information on the Wise family. In my notes, an older family member said he was a second cousin to Joseph. Joseph Wise said he was Scotch-Irish, however many think the Wises were German Jews. Joeph had a sister who married a Finklea. It is thought Joseph was raised near the little Pee Dee River at either Nicholls or Hyman S. C. I visited Hyman some years ago and found a cemetery with Finkleas and Wises. Joseph died in 1910 and it is known that his father left a will in Horry County. The records had been sent out to be copied when I was there, but if someone had the time to search the courthouse I feel we might find a few pieces of the puzzle. I hope to get back there someday myself. Thanks, Sybil

Hi Sybil, I read this recent posting and note that one of my distant cousins made the Ivan Wise connection. The Marion COunty Wises married into the Finkleas, and there was a Finklea Wise who was, I believe, the son of Charity Dew Wise and the brother of James Christopher Wise (not my James, the emigrant).
Ivan was a common name in the James Wise family. Besides Ivan Monroe, who was James' grandson, there was a son named Ivan, who was a CIvil War vet and one of the co-founders in the late 1850s of Wiseville (later Shongaloo) in what is now northern Webster Parish.
My records show that there was a Thomas Wise who appears as early as 1737 on the jury lists for one of the parishes which comprised the land which later became Marion/Dillon and Horry Counties. I also found that a Thomas Wise recorded a land patent in 1786 with the state of SOuth Carolina for 150 acres in Bear Swamp on the N.C./S/C border. Bear Swamp was later the residence of Ambrose Wise, who appears as early as the 1800 U.S. Census and died around 1829. His recorded succession had no will, but a number of Wises purchased property from the estate, including Moses Wise, Sally Wise, Mourning Wise. There was also an Aaron Wise who lived in the area at the same time as Ambrose, who was a founder of Bear Swamp Baptist Church, along with his wife Nancy.
It seems certain that your group is related to our James Wise group. There are some descendants of the Wises who stayed in South Carolina who are doing this research as well, and interestingly, the story about German Jews occurs there, too. Like your family, though, my grandfather always thought we were Scotch-Irish and English in origin.
Thanks for the census info. I will start working on the Horry COunty records more intently. Regards, Jon [19]
