Biography

Birth

Sarah H. Wiseman was born on 27 December 1829, reportedly in Logansport, Cass, Indiana, United States, to John Wesley Wiseman (1801-1882) and Hannah Venner (1805-1839). Her birth location may have been in Harrison, Harrison County, Indiana based on Census records. In the 1830 Census[1], her father John Wiseman (free white male 20-29) was reported in Harrison County, Indiana, with one white female 20-29 (his wife Hannah) and three females under age 5: daughters Elizabeth born 1827, Catherine born 1828, and Sarah born 1829.

Early Life

Sarah lived in Harrison County, Indiana with her parents in the 1830s. Her younger sisters Lydia A and Elizabeth J Wiseman born in 1836 and 1838, were both born in Indiana[2] Her mother died in 1839 and her father remarried in 1841 in Cass, Indiana[3]. The family likely left Indiana after 1843 when her half-sister Harriet Wiseman was born in Indiana, and resettled in Andrew County, Missouri. In 1847, Sarah was married in Andrew County, Missouri. No Census record for 1840 has yet been found for John Wiseman and his family.

In 1850, Sarah and her husband Joseph Pearl were living in Jackson, Andrew County, Missouri[4] . Their household consisted of themselves and their first child James Pearl born in 1849. Her husband Joseph was listed as a farmer. Living nearby were James Pearl (father of John) and his second wife Elizabeth J Wiseman Pearl (sister of Sarah). Sarah's father John Wiseman and his second wife Catherine were also living in Andrew County, Missouri.

Travel to Oregon Via the Oregon Trail

She arrived in Oregon in October 1852[5] with her husband and their two eldest children: James Alexander Pearl and John Rush Pearl. Sarah and Joseph travelled the Oregon Trail by wagon train. Their wagon train party included Sarah's father John Wiseman, several of her siblings, and her husband's father James Pearl and his family.

Marriage and Family

She married Rev. Joseph A. Pearl (1829-1894) on 25 August 1847 in Andrew County, Missouri.

Life in Oregon

Sarah and her husband Joseph settled Oregon Donation Land Claim No. 1833 in Linn County, Oregon Territory on 30 Aug 1853. Affidavits to their claim included Silas Keeney (later married Malinda Pearl, sister of her husband Joseph), John Wiseman (her father), James Pearl (her father-in-law and husband of her sister Elizabeth J Wiseman), and Columbus Deal (husband of her sister Lydia Ann Wiseman). A plat map circa 1870-1890 shows property owned by Joseph Pearl located in Linn County, T13S R3W, Section 33.[7] This location is about halfway between modern day Brownsville (on the east) and Halsey (on the west).

Sarah and Joseph lived in Linn County for the rest of her life. By 1860, they had four additional children: Orpha Jane, Silas Henry, Martha Ann, and Joseph William (listed as 2 months old on the Census record). Joseph was listed as a farmer. Sarah and the children were reported in Linn County with the nearest Post Office being Brownsville, Oregon[8]. Joseph was reported in Linn County with the nearest Post Office being Pine, Oregon[9]

In 1870, Sarah and Joseph were reported in Peoria, Linn County, Oregon[10] with all ten of their children born before 1870. Children born between 1860 and 1870 included: Ida, Elizabeth J, Melinda Alice and Fannie Olive Pearl. Joseph's occupation was listed farmer. Peoria was a prosperous town in the 1870s, located on the bank of the Willamette River. Now an unincorporated community, it is located northwest of modern day Halsey, Linn County, Oregon.

In 1880, Sarah and Joseph were reported in Halsey, Linn County, Oregon[11] with five of their children including their youngest child Edwin C Pearl born in 1873. Their household included Sarah's father John Wiseman and Joseph's orphaned niece Laura Keeney (daughter of Silas Keeney and Melinda Pearl Keeney), with her relationship listed as "ward". The family was living in town, east of railroad, and Joseph's occupation was listed as dry goods merchant.

Sometime after her husband Joseph died in 1894, Sarah moved to Baker County, Oregon where she resided, in 1900, with her daughter Fannie Olive and Fannie's husband Charles Dupuis.[12]

PLEASE DO NOT CHANGE the placement of the reference and footnote notations. 1/2 of the census data and other is lost if you do. No rule that I know of that says you have to have no space between "Sources" and References or can't have footnotes. And yes, I have read the "Help" page. Thank you.
