Biography

John Wiseman

He was the son of William Wiseman of Canfield, Essex and his wife Mary Glascock. [1]
He married Agnes Josselyn, by whom he had three sons and several daughters [2][3] [4]

One of the executors of his father in law Rauffe Josselyn's will of 1525. [5] [6]
He was Servant of 15th Earl of Oxford, member of the council of the 16th Earl by 1542, auditor to the 16th Earl in 1542; auditor at the court of augmentations Cheshire, Derbyshire, Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire, 12 May 1536-4 May 1544, Kent, Surrey, Sussex in 1552-3; J.P. Essex 1554-d. He was Member of parliament for Maldon (1554) and East Grinstead (1555). [7]
He left a will dated 12th Aug 1558 and proved 25 Aug 1558 as of John Wiseman of Great Canfield, Essex, Esquire. [8] The will distributed his lands between his heir John and his younger sons Thomas and Robert, bestowed 200 marks and £20 towards marriage on his daughter Clement, and provided for his wife, who was the executrix. [9]

    • The Will of Rauffe Josselyn of Moche Canfeld [co. Essex], the last day of May 1525.
    • To be buried in the church of St. Saviour of Canfeild. To the mother church of St. Paule in London 12d. To the high altar of the church of Canfeld, for my tythes forgot, a "blak howyd cow." My wife at her leisure to deliver a bullock to keep a light before [the image of] St. Nicholas. To every one of my godchildren 4d. To the reparation of the church of Canfeild 40s.
    • To my wife Elizabeth all my lands both freehold and copy- hold, by licence of the lord [of the manor], for life; and at her decease my freehold land to Philyppe my son, with the tenement called Caldres and Cokmemys; and if he die without heirs of his body lawfully begotten, then the freehold land and tenements to Rauffe my son; and if he die without heirs of his body lawfully begotten, then to my son Nicholas; and if he die without heirs of his body lawfully begotten, then to my two daughters Agnes and Denyse and to their heirs, and for lack of such to the next of my blood.
    • To my son Rauffe, bis heirs and assigns, my tenement in Canfeild called "loue- dens."
    • To my sons Philyppe and Rauffe £3. 6s. 8d. apiece.

    • To the vicar of Much Canfield aforesaid for my tithes negligently forgotten 6s 8d.
    • The manor & demesne lands of Much Canfield, Essex, which I hold for the term of 81 years of the demise & lease of the right honourable John, Earl of Oxenford, by his indenture thereof to me made bearing date the 27th February 1546, I give unto Agnes, my wife, and bestow amongst the poor people dwelling in Much Canfield, High(?) Roothing, Hatfield, Much Dunmow and Much Waltham six pounds thirteen shillings and four pence.
    • I give the said manor and demesne lands after the death of my said wife unto the foresaid John Wiseman, my eldest son.
    • To said Agnes, my wife, all and singular my stock and store, cattle, goods, chattels, plate, jewels and money remaining and being in my said farm of the manor of Much Canfield and the said parsonage and at Burton grange in the county of Leicester at the time of my decease, deducting thereof the charges of my funerals, which shall be to distribute amongst poor folks ten pounds.
    • I will and charge the said Agnes, her executors and assigns, to pay Clemens, my daughter, two hundred marks and twenty pounds towards the preferment in marriage.

    • To my brother Wygnale of Waltham a black coat, and to my sister, his wife, a black gown and a ring of like value of twenty shillings.
    • To John Glascock, Richard Glascock, young John Wiseman and Richard Lyndsell and to every of my daughter Everard’s sons, every of them a young foal or a colt by the discretion of my executors.
    • The residue of my goods and chattels whatsoever they be I give and bequeath to Agnes, my wife, whom I order and make my principal executor.
    • My executors to help my said wife forward in this troublesome business my loving sons-in-law, William Glascock and John Lyndsell, to whom I give for their pains five pounds apiece;
    • Supervisor of this my testament and last will my especial friend, Mr Weston, to whom I give for his pains and labour five pounds, a black gown,and a ring of the value of forty shillings.
    • I will and bequeath to my loving sister Wignale forty shillings, and to old good Bickner other forty shillings and a black coat.
    • Also where I have disbursed for my daughter Everard fifty-eight pounds for the lease of her house in London, I do freely release and give into her hands the same lease again by this will.
    • And further I will and bequeath to my son, John Wiseman, a nest of gilt goblets and two standing cups with their covers, and all my apparel.

Sir John and Agnes (Josselyn) Wiseman had 11 children, per the article by Elizabeth French cited as a source here. Perhaps someone permitted to edit fifteenth century profiles should list them here, including #11, Anne who married (as his second wife) John Lindsell, clerk of the assizes of Essex County, and then married the man who succeeded John in that post.
