Biography

MARY ANN (BURLEIGH) WISNER JAY Mary Ann was born about 1777 in either Pennsylvania or Maine? I found no information on her parents yet, but believe she came to Illinois about 1835 with the Jay, Burleigh and Maxfield families.

As far as I can tell, Mary was married twice. First to an unknown Wisner/Wisener. She had at least one son with her first husband because her son George Jay, JR's obituary states that in 1828, he went South, in the company of his half brother, ? Wisener, and that they stopped near Natchez, Mississippi, where they worked for seven years before George SR called his son home.

[Note. Mary Ann's maiden name was Wisner and not Burleigh.]

Mary's second marriage was to George Jay. They were married in Pennsylvania about 1805. Their first son George, JR was born in Shippensburg, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania on Nov 28, 1806. When he was about three years old George SR moved his family from Pennsylvania to Zanesville, Muskingum County, Ohio. In the 1830 census the George Jay SR family is recorded in Perry, Muskingum County, Ohio as: One Male ages 10 thru 14, One Male ages 40 thru 49, One Female Under 5, One Female age 5 thru 9, Two Females ages 15 thru 19, One Female age 50 thru 59; TOTAL Five Free White Persons Under 20, One Free White Persons age 20 thru 49, One Free White Person age 50 thru 59; Total Free White Persons = 7. So if this is the right George Jay family, George and Mary had four or five additional children while living in Ohio.

George & Mary once again migrated with their family in 1835. This time they headed West with several other families where they landed in Mercer County, setting up their homestead in Abington Township (Keithsburg) Illinois. I can't find any other records of him, so I'm not sure if Mary's older "Wisner" son stayed in Mississippi or migrated West with the Jay family.

George & Mary Jay became a very prominent and well respected farming family in the Keithsburg area. When George SR died on May 26, 1946 the Homestead was turned over to George JR. In the 1850 census Mary Ann Jay is living with her son George and family on the homestead. They are recorded as: George Jay Jr. owning land in Township 13 N Range 4 W; George Jay, head of household, age 43, occupation carpenter, born Pa; Wife Nancy, age 39, born Maine; Children - Alva, 9, born Il; Mira, 7, Il; Alice, 4, Il; Unnamed Jay 3/12, male and Unnamed Jay 3/12 female, (Twins Albert & Linda) both born Il, and Mary Ann Jay, widowed, age 73, born Pennsylvania.

Mary died April 29, 1856, age 83 years and is buried in the New Boston Cemetery next to George Jay, Sr. After their deaths, their children Albert and Agnes took over the old family homestead where they each remained for the rest of their lives.
