Biography
Matthew Keen Withers was born to William and Mary Withers in 1790. He was the great-grandson of Elizabeth (Keene) Withers, who married into the Withers family in the early 18th century. Both were prominent families in both Fauquier and Stafford Counties, Virginia.
By 1810, Matthew had his own household, as recorded by the United States Census taken that year.[1]
Matthew moved to Kentucky sometime after that, a fact supported by his record of service with Dudley's Mounted Battalion, Kentucky Volunteers, during the War of 1812.[2]
Matthew married Sally Speaks Withers on 24 July, 1817, in Jefferson County, Kentucky.[3]
In April 1837 Matthew Keene Withers crossed the Sabine River at Logansport with his family on the way to Shelby County Texas.
Household in 1850 included Sary S. Withers, female, age 56, born in Virginia, probably his wife, and Mary A. Withers, female, age 14, born in Kentucky, probably their daughter.[4]
