Bill Withers was an American musician, singer, songwriter and record producer, best known for the songs "Ain't No Sunshine" and "Lean On Me." He was inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2015.[1]
William Harrison Withers was born in 1938 in West Virginia. He was the son of Mattie Galloway and William Withers, a coal miner. His father died when Bill was only thirteen years old.

At age 17 he joined the US Navy to broaden his horizons. During this time, he developed an interest in music and songwriting. After serving nine years, he left the Navy and soon moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in music.
His first marriage was to Actor Denise Nicholas on 17 January 1973 in Los Angeles, California.[2] Their marriage ended in divorce after only one year in April 1974.[3] On 31 December 1976, he married his second wife, Marcia Johnson.[4] They had two children, Todd and Kori.
Bill died in Los Angeles in 2020[5] and is buried in Forest Lawn Memorial Park.[6]
