Notes

Note N317From Report sent to me by Ralph Withers: "Morgan Withers appeared in the 1850 Census of Gaston County as age 42, or born about 1808; According to Miles Laban Hoffman, Morgan Withers married Sallie Chandler, but Hoffman gives neither the date nor place of the marriage, that information coming from a submission by Virginai Weather Gull to the International Genealogical Index of the Mormon Church, to wit, 8 February 1831, Lincoln Co., NC. However, the actual marriage bond identified the bride as Sarah Cox; Hoffman rarely gave the date of death of the individuals mentioned in his Our Kin Given not only that he also stated that Morgan and his wife had no children, something implicitly established by the fact there were no children in his household in either the 1840 census of Lincoln co., NC or 1850 census of Gaston Co, with Sallie being too old following the latter for it to be likely they had issue subsequent to that census, but also that no value was stated for Morgan's property in the 1850 census, implicitly establishing that he was a tenant on the land he farmed, farmer being his occupation as stated in the 1850 census, it is unlikely that there would be either a will or intestate settlement of his estate by which to establish a more precise date for his death."
