In the book "Lewisburg Landmarks" by Ruth Woods Dayton, 1957, there is a drawing of a large old house, part of which was built by James Withrow in 1818, and ran a tannery. It is one of the earliest brick buildings in Lewisburg. His son James II succeeded him in the ownership of both tannery and house, and became a prominent man. After the Civil War, Gen. Robert E. Lee was a guest at White Sulphur Springs and was invited to the home of Mr. Withrow for dinner. Many of the townspeople came to pay their respects. Noland 588.
