Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
Agnes (Witt) Key was a Virginia colonist.

Agnes Witt was born about 1731, probably in Goochland County, Virginia Colony based on her father's land records in which he was in Goochland County by 1738 (became Albemarle County in 1744)[1]. Agnes is the daughter of William Witt and his wife (name unknown). Agnes was named as "Agnes Key" in her father's 1754 will[2] She died about 1788, possibly in Bedford County, Virginia.

Marriage

Agnes married John Key, usually stated as on 27 December 1750 in Albemarle County, Virginia Colony[3]. There appears to be no original marriage record.

Research Notes

Witt-1888 06:28, 6 January 2024 (UTC): There appears to be no source for Agnes' name as anything except Agnes. Please correct only if a proper source is provided. Middle names were extremely rare before the Rev. War (except for royalty), but especially for a woman.

Elizabeth Mildred (Daux) Witt as the mother of Agnes has been determined to be a non-existent person. See her profile for details on research and evidence for disproving her existence. She is being removed as wife of William Witt and as mother of his children.

We do know William Witt had a wife, he had children. No evidence has been located which includes her name or any information about her; no surname, no birth or death dates or locations. Some mentions have turned up that her given name may have been "Mary," but again no evidence is provided.

NOTE regarding county formations: Henrico Co. formed in 1617; Goochland formed in 1727 from Henrico; Albemarle formed in 1744 from Goochland; Amherst formed in 1761 from Albemarle.
