Biography

Thomas Witt was born about 1830 in Virginia. He died in1882.

According to his Confederate military records, Thomas was 31 years old when he enlisted at Chestnut Fork, Bedford Co., VA in the 28th Regt., Virginia Infantry. He had sandy hair, grey eyes, light complexion, and was 6 feet 1 inch tall. According to the Bedford County Register of Births, he was a carpenter by trade, just as his father was before him, when his son, Heenan Witt was born on August 13, 1860. According to the 1870 Census of Bedford County on page 321, Thomas lived next door to his Mother, Martha "Patsey" Witt. According to the 1880 Bedford County Census, Thomas was still residing close to his mother, Patsey. So he resided next to his Mother for at least 30 years.

Marriage

Thomas married Martha J. Wright on 20 Jan 1856 in Bedford County, Virginia.^[1] The couple had three sons and four daughters.

Research Notes

I have not found a source supporting his middle name of Alfred as yet. One death certificate for his son, Heenan Thomas Witt, list his father's name as Williams.^[5] Another son, Benjamin Price Witt lists him as Thomas William Witt.^[6] Other records list him as Thomas M. Witt or Thomas W. Witt. BJS
