Hughes was born about 1792. He was the son of Joel Witt and Mary Taylor. He was among the men captured and killed by Santa Ana's men at Goliad on 27 Mar 1836.[1]
Hughes Witt ...was a member of Captain Horton's Mounted Rangers (Georgia Battalion) under James Walker Fannin's command in the Texas War of Independence. Hughes Witt was one of many soldiers in Colonel Fannin's command who were captured and then summarily executed by Mexican soldiers after the Battle of Goliad, Texas on March 19 and 20, 1836. The Battle of Goliad took place shortly after the Battle of the Alamo, which fell on March 6, 1836.
