Achsah (Witter) Galloway was born on December 2, 1787 in Pennsylvania, United States. She was the daughter of Elijah Witter and Elizabeth (Story) Witter. About 1809, she married Samuel Galloway, born in 1784 in Massachusetts the son of John and Mary (Reynolds) Galloway. He was a minister for Society of Christians, also called a Newlight preacher.
In 1814 they left New York to live in Union Township, Union County, Ohio. Soon after moving there, Samuel shot a deer while hunting, and, thinking the deer was dead, he walked up to slit its throat. The deer sprang up and its horn tore into him and tore out some of his lungs. He recovered but was never able to do heavy manual labor. Samuel can be found in the 1820 census in Union Township, Union County, Ohio with 5 males under 10, 1 male 26 and under 45, 1 female under 10 years, 1 female 16 and under 26, and 1 female 26 and under 45. A short time later Samuel went back to New York on a preaching tour. As his grandson Joseph wrote, "In those days it meant something to be a preacher or a Minister of the Gospel, as their pay was very limited. They received no salary, all they got was the small collections and an occasional donation. They had to travel mostly on horseback and often on foot. He was said to be a very strong man and believed in working purely for the good of the cause and not for pay. While on this arduous tour he took sick and died, leaving my grandmother with her family of small children almost to the charity of the world, in a new country with scarcely anything except her own hands and a willing heart." Samuel died on 16 July 1821 in Williamson, Wayne County, New York, USA. He was buried in Marion, Wayne County, New York, USA. A Union County history states that "Samuel Galloway was a man of excellent character, and was a much esteemed and respected citizen; all his children now living are walking in his footsteps, living lives of usefulness, and doing honor to their ancestor."
Achsah remained in Union County until 1822. At that time she became fascinated with the Shaker movement and moved to their settlement (called Union Village) in Warren County, Ohio where she raised her children to adulthood. Achsah Gallaway is listed as a Signer of the Covenant at Union Village, Warren County, Ohio on December 31, 1829. She and her daughter, Sabrah, remained throughout their lives without marrying, a firm believer in their faith, which did not believe in marriage. All of the other children became dissatisfied with Shaker beliefs (one of which was to remain single). They left the Shakers, married and settled in life. You can find them listed on the 1850 census in Turtle Creek Township, Warren County, Ohio. Achsah died on 30 December 1877 in the Shaker Village, Warren County, Ohio, USA, enjoying the best of health up to the time of her death.
