He was the father of four young men who lived with their uncle at the time of the 1857 census. The fact that his sons did not live with their parents in 1857 suggests that Johann Michael Wittmann passed away before that year. Because his name is not included at all in the 1857 census, he most likely passed away before 1850, and his death was noted in the 1850 male-only census. This theory is supported by the fact that his last child was born in 1845. His death likely happened between 1845 and 1849.
Once a man's death was noted in a census, it was not repeated in the next census simply because he had living, underage children. There is no mention of the children's mother in the 1857 census, so she, too, most likely passed away. Unless there are descendants who have good family records, we will most likely never know her name.
Johann Michael Wittman's sons were:
Georg Heinrich Wittmann, born 1839
Johannes Wittmann, born 1841
Heinrich Wittmann, born 1843
Konrad Wittmann, born 1845
These sons lived with their aunt and uncle Apollonia and Johann Wittmann at the time of the 1857 census. A copy of this census is shown below to connect him to his children.
