Biography

Leon is remembered by Romain Gary (Real name Roman Kacew ; French diplomat, novelist, film director and World War II aviator) in his autobiographic novel "La Promesse de l'Aube" (along with other lost soldiers) and is referred to by his war nickname, "Stone":

"Le voyage de Gibraltar à Glasgow dura dix-sept jours et je découvris que le bateau transportait d'autres « déserteurs » français ; Nous fîmes connaissance ; Il y avait là Chatoux, abattu depuis au dessus de la mer du Nord ; Gentil, qui devait tomber avec son Hurricane dans un combat à un contre dix ; Loustreau, tombé en Crète ; les deux frères Langer, dont le cadet fut mon pilote, avant d'être tué par la foudre en plein vol, dans le ciel africain, et dont l'aîné vit toujours Mylski-Latour, qui devait changer son nom en Latour-Prendsgarde, et qui devait tomber avec son Beaufighter, je crois, au large de la Norvège ; il y avait le Marseillais Rabinovith, dit Olive tué à l'entraînement ; Carnac, qui a sauté avec ses bombes sur la Ruhr ; Stone, l'imperturbable, qui vole toujours [ (Stone, the unshakeable, who still flies)]; d'autres encore, aux noms plus ou moins fictifs, inventés pour protéger leurs familles restées en France, ou simplement pour tourner la page sur le passé, mais parmi tous les insoumis présents à bord de l'Oakrest, il y en avait un, surtout dont le nom ne cessera jamais de répondre dans mon cœur à toutes les questions, à tous les douteset à tous les découragements."
