Names: He is noticed in source as atte Wode, Wode, Awode, Wodde but is seen in the History of Parliament as Atwode.[1]
Thomas was the 3rd son of Thomas atte Wode, of Canterbury (said to have died in 1490). His mother is not named in the source.[2] His brother was William Atwode, later MP for Canterbury.
Thomas Atwode was admitted to the freedom of Canterbury in 1490 as the son of a freeman.[3] It is supposed that this was at maturity and thus provides the estimate of his birth.
He married Margaret Moyle, daughter of John Moyle of Eastwell.[4] Moyle purchased Eastwell (in London) late in life and was MP for Bodmin, Cornwall, where he lived prior to moving to London. No children are mentioned in the source.
He died in 1532. His will was proved on 9 September 1532, his widow being executrix, but was not registered. Atwode was buried in the chapel which he had built in the church of St. Mildred, Canterbury, as a burial place for himself and his family. His monument inscription described him as keeper of the rolls in the household of an ecclesiastic, probably Archbishop Warham whose will had been witnessed in August 1531 by a ‘Thomas Woodd’.[5]
