Robert atte Wpde is known to have leased property in the Parish of Deptford, a boundary parish between Kent and Surrey.[1] The notice in Kent Feet of Fines suggest he acquired property there, either complete or additional, in 9 Richard II (on the morrow of the Ascension - a term used to describe the time five weeks and one day after Easter). In the Regnal Calendar for Richard II Easter fell on 22 April 1386 thus the morrow of the Ascension would be the 28 May 1386. The deed in the London Bridge House Estates collection[2] is dated to 1375 indicating he held land prior.
Judging by the material available it seems likely that Robert was a yeoman of the Parish, that is a freeman working the land.
In 1391 there is a grant to Robert atte Wode, by Henry Yende or Yevele and John Clyfford, masons, to a parcel of land in Depforde, in the parish of Westgrenewiche, suggesting the land was held in the Manor of Deptford, then (in 1391) held by Sir William Heron.[3][4]
Robert atte Wode had married Katherine, last name unknown. He died prior to 1415 and Katherine remarried, to a William Pikeman.[5], a skimmer, who lived in the parish of Westgrenewiche (West Greenwich, the same Parish (different name for it).
