On July 4, 1942, Dick enlisted in the Navy at age 17 with the consent of his mother.
On the morning of July 4, 1944, Dick was in the gunner’s seat of a Curtiss SB2C Helldriver piloted by Owen Hintz that flew off of the USS Yorktown CV-10 to bomb the Japanese on Chichi Jima’s harbor. Dick and Owen’s plane was shot down with Owen killed instantly. Dick was captured and tortured thus becoming a P.O.W. About a month later, Dick was brutely executed (beheaded) by the Japanese.
