Carl Woese is Notable.

Carl was born in 1928. He passed away in 2012. He was an American Biophysicist who discovered the third branch of life beyond bacteria and eucarya: the archaea and thereby redrawing the tree of life. He also pioneered research into RNA and its uses in understanding the relationships between organisms, further advancing the understanding of the origins of life and shedding light on possible mechanics of evolution.

His papers are held at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.

His life, research, personality, influence and his own scientific influences are a significant portion of David Quammens's book The Tangled Tree: A Radical New History of Life.[1]
